Dear friends and patients, vaccination is KEY to our overcoming this pandemic. The mRNA vaccines being given in Singapore are safe and the clinical data for their effectiveness is very clear. Please get vaccinated as soon as possible.

Dear patients and friend, just some personal thoughts about the pandemic situation currently in Singapore.

As you can clearly see, there are increasingly more cases of community spread in Singapore over the past couple of weeks. This is due to the variant strains of COVID19 reaching Singapore which are more highly transmissible and virulent. I would like to implore everyone not to be complacent and to be extra vigilant because it is likely over the next 2-6 weeks that we will see more clusters forming in the community.

1. Mask wearing is vital - the surgical mask is better than the cloth mask. Ensure that it is well fitted covering your nose and mouth at all times

2. Good hand hygiene - wash frequently with soap and use hand sanitizer when washing is not possible. Try not to touch public surfaces (use an antibacterial wipe). Even the knuckle bumping as a way of greeting should be avoided.

3. Social distancing is key. Try to limit social interaction as much as possible at least for the next few weeks until the situation is better. Try not to meet friends over meals for a while. If you have to eat in public, eat quickly then put your mask back on

4. If offered, please get vaccinated as quickly as possible. Vaccination will still protect you from the original strain of COVID19, and if you are infected with a variant form of COVID19, it does seem like your symptoms of the disease may be milder. So vaccination is still very important. Vaccination is as safe as it can be. Catching the COVID19 is far worse.

5. If you are unwell with even one of the symptoms (fever more than 37.5 degrees celcius OR cough OR runny nose OR sore throat OR loss of smell OR aching bones), isolate yourself and see a doctor as soon as possible. You may have to get a swab, but the swab is not painful and the results are often received within 24 hours. It is a small price to pay for peace of mind and to keep yourself and your family safe 😊

I hope this helps. Take care and keep safe. Protect yourselves and your family.

If you have a choice, STAY HOME AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. Do not go out except for absolutely essential reasons. Package your food to take home instead of eating out. BUT if you have no choice but to be out in the community, practice social distancing, and wear a mask if you have one. Even a washable cloth mask is better than not wearing a mask at all. There is new scientific rationale as to why we all should be masked. Sew your own cloth mask if you have to.

The official recommendation in the United States (and other Western countries) that the public should not wear face masks was motivated by…

Please, everybody, please take this seriously and stay home as much as you can. The next two to three weeks are crucial. Now is not the time to continue going to the malls and eating out. Now is not the time to continue meeting up with friends. Stay home as much as possible and take this seriously. Our nation depends on it. Your health and the safety of your family depends on it.

As coronavirus clusters and cases with no known connections mushroom here, Singapore is facing the threat of the virus spreading uncontrollably, experts warned.. Read more at straitstimes.com.

The following is EXCELLENT advice from Dr Tan Yoke Khim, Respiratologist from Gleneagles Hospital.

People with respiratory tract infections and their social responsibility.
1. Put on masks
- for how long? Best for the duration of symptoms and 14 days thereafter.
- why? To prevent spread through saliva when talking or from secretions when coughing or sneezing.
2. Wash hands often.
3. Do not mingle with others unless urgent - use eletronic to communicate.
4. Walk outdoors wearing a mask if you are not too ill.
5. See a doctor
6. If you are breathless, call for an ambulance.
7. If you are on MC, do not go to work.
8. Do not share food or drinks.

Parents, reading to your children enhances vocabulary and other necessary skills, exactly the opposite of what electronic tablets such as the iPad and smartphones do. Keep electronic devices away from your children and read to them from young.

With the increased recognition that reading to children enhances vocabulary and other important skills, the American Academy of Pediatrics is asking its members to become advocates.
