Live Replay 🎥 “Are there effective treatments for Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD)?”

Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease can be harrowing for young parents, especially when painful mouth ulcers make it hard for your child to eat or drink.

As Paediatrician Dr Terence Tan explains, for most children, HFMD is a mild viral illness that they recover from within a few days. Keeping children well hydrated helps ease discomfort, supports healing, and can prevent complications that may require hospital care.

Should you be unsure how to manage symptoms or when to seek medical attention, speak to your doctor for advice. Follow Mount Alvernia Hospital on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok for more Alvernia Live Chat replays, and leave a comment to suggest what you would like our doctors to cover next 💬

Live Replay 🎥 “How can we tell the difference between a cold and the flu in kids?”

Runny nose, cough, fever - many childhood illnesses look alike, which can make it hard for parents to tell whether it is just a common cold or something more serious like influenza.

Paediatrician Dr Terence Tan shares how symptom severity often provides important clues. While colds tend to be milder, influenza usually comes with higher fevers, marked lethargy, and body aches that make children look and feel much more unwell.

If you are ever in doubt, seeking medical advice early can help guide the next steps. Follow Mount Alvernia Hospital on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok for more Alvernia Live Chats, and comment below to tell us what parenting health questions you would like answered next 💬

New Year, New Beginnings

Meet Little Tangyuan, born on New Year’s Day 1 Jan 2026.

Parents Kaiyuan, 33, and Annie, 31, first crossed paths in the U.S. while working in the IT industry. Despite the distance, their love only grew stronger when Kaiyuan moved to Singapore in 2019 and they kept their long-distance relationship going through the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2022, Annie finally joined him here, and they tied the knot.

Little Tangyuan’s due date was Jan 10th, but with a high-risk pregnancy and early dilation, she couldn’t wait to meet the world. After celebrating Annie's birthday on Dec 31st and enjoying the New Year’s fireworks, they headed to the hospital at 1am. A smooth delivery later, their little one arrived with the sweetest gentle cries filling their hearts with joy.

Daddy Kaiyuan shared his excitement “Introducing our new bundle of joy to Fonso, our 5-month-old puppy is going to be interesting. Our puppy’s name means "square," while our baby’s nickname, Yuan, means "circle" hence perfectly complementing each other.

Mummy Annie also shared happily that “I wish for our daughter to grow up healthy, happy, and free to become whoever she wants to be. We looking forward to seeing our daughter and puppy grow up side by side.”

Our director of Corporate Development and Human Resources, Ms Han May Ching presented gifts to the first 3 babies born in the new year including a $188 angbao from the hospital for the first baby. She also extended her wishes, “As we welcome the new year, we also celebrate the arrival of all our 2026 babies, beautiful reminder of new beginnings and the joys of family. On behalf of Mount Alvernia Hospital, sending our warmest wishes for a year filled with love, health, and happiness to all.”

A big thank you to our sponsors for their amazing gifts, which made this special moment more memorable.

On Christmas Day at 1pm, the Sim family’s Christmas got even brighter with the arrival of Baby Sim. Weighing 3130g and measuring 50cm, she was truly a gift wrapped in love, a perfect blessing for the holiday season.

Parents Jonathan, 39 and Chloe, 36 first met while working at a bank, getting acquainted over a Christmas dinner in 2014. What began as a festive connection blossomed into love, marriage in 2019, and a growing family. Their firstborn, Ariel, now 4 years old was also born at Mount Alvernia Hospital in 2021 and this Christmas, their hearts grew even fuller with the arrival of Baby Sim.

Though Baby Sim’s expected due date was January 7, 2026, she had other plans. After a check-up on December 22, Mummy Chloe began showing signs of early labour. By Christmas morning, she was admitted to the hospital, and after 7 hours of labour, Baby Sim made her joyful, early debut.

“Welcoming our baby on Christmas Day felt like a true blessing and our paediatrician noticed a gentle birthmark on Baby Sim’s forehead, which is believed to be “angel’s kiss”, a symbol of love, protection and reassurance.” Mummy Chloe happily shared. Daddy Jonathan shared with a smile “We are excited to bring our Christmas princess home and big sister Ariel is eager to share all her princess dresses with her baby sister”.

Our director of nursing, Ms Shirley Tay presented the gifts and wished the family "May this Christmas be filled with love, joy, and the magic of new beginnings with your little one."

A heartfelt thank you to our sponsors for their lovely gifts, which made this special moment even more unforgettable.

In partnership with Down Syndrome Association - Singapore (DSA), our Outreach Team brought complimentary health screenings directly to DSA members and caregivers on the DSA premises – making preventive care more comfortable and accessible.

Those with abnormal results can also receive a one-time free doctor consultation at the Mount Alvernia Outreach Medical Clinic, located at Enabling Village.

Beyond screenings, we offered a lineup of meaningful health talks, from understanding medical reports with Dr Djoni Huang, Director of Clinical Services, to navigating feeding challenges and nutrition in Down Syndrome with clinical dietitian Aileen Ling, to managing caregiver stress with trainer Kevin Khoo from the Alvernia Psychological Health Centre.

Through knowledge, care and connection, we hope to help every Person with Disability and their families take a confident step towards better health. 💛
