For the patient, finding a doctor who will do what is right for you, regardless of external pressures, is most important.
The medical community needs to ensure that clinical decisions are not swayed by insurers or other parties and guidelines on investigations and treatment are according to professional bodies' opinions rather than the insurance payers, who have a clear conflict of interest.
America's problems show us where the perils lie in the evolution of our healthcare landscape and all of us have an opportunity and responsibility to avoid making the same mistakes.
