Cl A/Prof Teoh Khim Hean – Senior Consultant, Prosthodontics, Department of Restorative Dentistry was featured by The Straits Times for his expertise in handcrafting eye prosthetics and how it restores patients' appearances and confidence.

The story highlighted how a patient’s cancer required eye removal; her prosthetic eye, crafted using her own hair for lashes, restored her confidence and ended public scrutiny.

Prof Teoh also trains others in eye prosthetics, citing the joy of seeing patients regain confidence, and noting manual artistry surpasses 3D technology for realism.

Today is World Diabetes day.

Did you know that about 1 in 7 people seeking dental care may unknowingly have prediabetes or diabetes.

A research team led by Dr Chee Hoe Kit, Senior Consultant with the Department of Restorative Dentistry, Periodontics Unit at NDCS found that routine dental visits could play a crucial role in identifying undiagnosed diabetes and prediabetes, particularly in Asian populations.

Published in Nov 2024 in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology, the study titled “Identifying Undiagnosed Diabetes and Prediabetes in the Dental Setting in an Asian Population—A Clinical Risk Model” assessed over 1,000 patients at NDCS and found that nearly 1 in 7 had undiagnosed diabetes or prediabetes.

A warm congratulations to Dr Lee Ker Jia Cheryl – Associate Consultant, Department of Orthodontics on receiving the NMRC Research Training Fellowship for the project titled “Automated Surgical Planning in Chinese Orthognathic Surgery Patients”.

The NMRC Research Training Fellowship (RTF) is awarded to outstanding and talented clinicians for research training to gain qualifications and skills to become Clinician Scientists.
