Festive seasons often remind us of warmth and abundance. For many elderly, low-income dialysis patients, however, this is when 𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐞.

Rising living costs and the financial strain of ongoing dialysis often mean that small festive comforts are quietly foregone.

As rising kidney disease rates place increasing pressure on dialysis services, community support — through 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 and 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 — remains essential to ensuring patients continue to receive the critical care they need.

We are also uncompromising when it comes to the quality of medical care we provide. Across all our centres, patients are treated using 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐮𝐬 𝟱𝟬𝟬𝟴𝐒 dialysis machines, which are haemodiafiltration-capable, alongside 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐭-𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 that support safer and more personalised treatment.

Beyond dialysis, KDF supports patients’ 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰, 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 through programmes such as:

Donor support has also enabled key investments such as the opening of our 𝗔𝗱𝗺𝗶𝗿𝗮𝗹𝘁𝘆 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲 in 2022, which continues to have the capacity to serve more patients.

Beyond treatment, we continue 𝘂𝗽𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 to improve kidney health literacy through public education events and ongoing communications, helping more Singaporeans take action earlier to protect their kidney health.

With every patient bringing different needs, our KDF nurses and wellness coaches respond at every level:

• Offering emotional support as patients navigate the daily realities of kidney disease

It’s demanding work—but equally rewarding.

Most of us rarely stop to think about what a “normal life” means. For Christine, that changed 33 years ago when she was diagnosed with 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐲𝐜𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐤𝐢𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 (𝐏𝐊𝐃), a condition that affects about 5,000–6,000 people in Singapore.

Living with PKD presents many challenges, from fatigue to career and lifestyle changes.

Still, Christine faces each day with resilience and optimism, finding strength through KDF’s dialysis care, physiotherapy, and patient activities that keep her engaged with the community while she manages her condition.

Her story reminds us why 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 and 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 matter, especially given that PKD often goes unnoticed until individuals reach their 30s and 40s.
