Honestly, I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately — because more and more people are telling me, in and out of the consulting room, that their AI companion just gets them. Better than most people do.
And I get it. I really do. When human relationships feel complicated and exhausting, something that’s always available, never reactive, never needy — that’s genuinely appealing.
But as a psychoanalyst, something about this worries me.
We grow through imperfection. Through the moment someone doesn’t show up quite right and we survive it. Through the gap between what we need and what we actually get. That gap — as uncomfortable as it is — is where the self is built.
An AI that’s always perfectly there closes that gap. And in doing so, it might be robbing us of the very friction that makes us more human.
If an AI feels easier than your real relationships right now — I’m not here to judge. I’m curious. What are you hungry for? And what are you quietly avoiding?
