The source of a donor kidney and how long can it last?
There are two sources of donor kidney. First is a deceased donor. Due to external injuries which have cause brain-dead, the donor's organs can still function by artificially maintaining his blood circulation or respiratory system, and thus his heart, liver, kidney, lungs, etc can be used for transplantation. In order to receive a deceased donor kidney, the patient's blood type has to be a match. For example, blood type O can be used for patients with blood type A, AB, and O, but a blood type AB can only be used for patients with blood type AB. The more compatible the blood type, the less complications will occur. If a matched donor kidney is being rejected by the patient's body, medication can easily be used to resolve this problem.
This is why relative donors are a good donor kidney source as there will be high chances of compatibility between relatives, and thus reduces chances of rejection, difficulty of operation and also prolong the life of the donor kidney after the transplant. Patients who performed relative donor kidney transplants overs have lived for 43 years, and the donor kidney can last 19-20 years. On the other hand, 50% of deceased donor kidney receivers only lived for about 10 years.
