‘Singapore has taken this “clear stand” consistently over the years, such as when it opposed Vietnam’s invasion of Cambodia in 1978, said Mr Lee.

‘Singapore also took a stand against the United States’ invasion of Grenada at the UN General Assembly in 1983.

The construction of the centre was raised in Parliament last month when Singapore announced it would impose financial and trade sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.

Following the announcement, Jalan Besar GRC MP Denise Phua had asked whether the Government would review ongoing projects and initiatives with the Russian government.

Responding, Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan said Singapore has "no quarrel" with the Russian people.

Despite Singapore's limited direct links with Russia and Ukraine, the conflict between the two countries could impact the global economy and, in turn, contribute to cost of living pressures, said panellists at a post-Budget 2022 roundtable organised by The Straits Times and The Business Times on Monday (March 14).

With uncertainty over how the three-week-long invasion by Moscow of its neighbour might pan out, questions remain over the degree of inflation to expect, they added, with one expert warning of "nefarious activities" by companies taking advantage of the global situation to engage in price gouging.

A total of 6,920 people aged above 18 responded to the survey conducted across Australia, China, India and Singapore. Data was weighted by age and gender to better reflect the latest census data in each country, said Blackbox, a Singapore-based agency that monitors emerging regional and global trends.

Four per cent of the Singaporean respondents said they were behind Russia in the conflict, which the United Nations said has killed hundreds of Ukrainian civilians and led to more than three million fleeing to neighbouring countries.

Singapore Red Cross Supports Communities Affected by Ukraine Conflict

Singapore, 25 February 2022 - In response to the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, the Singapore Red Cross (SRC) will contribute US$100,000 to support affected communities, working through the Ukrainian Red Cross Society (URCS) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), in their ongoing response. The support will go towards the provision of relief supplies such as hygiene kits, family kits and household kits for the vulnerable who are displaced by the conflict.

In addition, SRC will launch a public fundraising appeal from 25 February to 31 May 2022 to raise more funds to aid the expected massive humanitarian operations.
Tensions in Ukraine have been high for the last eight years and escalated to an outright conflict on 24 February 2022. An estimated 3 million people in the country rely on humanitarian aid and 850,000 are displaced. Around 30 percent of the people in need are elderly. The number of internally displaced persons and humanitarian needs is expected to increase massively as the conflict continues to intensify. SRC is in close contact with URCS and the IFRC to ascertain the evolving needs on the ground and respond in an appropriate manner.

Mr Benjamin William, Secretary General and CEO of Singapore Red Cross, said, “We are deeply concerned about the outbreak of open conflict and its dire consequences. The humanitarian needs on the ground will continue to rise as the conflict intensifies. Working with our Red Cross Movement partners, we will continue to assist the affected communities, many of whom could potentially lose their homes and all their belongings.”

In line with universally accepted International Humanitarian Law, the Red Cross has called for the protection of non-combatants and critical infrastructure such as water and power systems in Ukraine, so that all humanitarian actors, including the Red Cross, will be able to have access to civilians needing help.
The Singapore Red Cross has also activated its “Restoring Family Links” (RFL) service to assist Singapore residents to locate their immediate family members who may have been affected by the disasters with whom they have difficulty in contacting. For assistance, please contact SRC.

Dear all, our hearts go out to all those affected in Ukraine and their loved ones. With our own family based in Kyiv, Ukraine currently, we worry and pray for their safety in hopes that this difficult period will soon pass.

We started Dumplings.ru with the intention to share the love that we have for our family dishes with everyone here - a place where people can come together to celebrate food in a cosy environment in spite of our cultural differences. Even now, we wish for nothing but peace during such troubling times. We do hope that people can be kinder in their words and refrain from leaving further hate speech in this humble space that we have created.
