In the final instalment of "Addicted", a three-part documentary series investigating the dark world of illicit drugs, Institute of Mental Health Singapore's NAMS Consultant, Dr Mohd Zakir, highlighted how THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) concentrations in genetically modified cannabis plants have increased over the years. This elevation leads to more severe psychiatric issues and negatively impacts brain modulation, resulting in impaired memory, compromised motor activities, hallucinations, delusions, and mood fluctuations.

SB Viknesan, Principal Counsellor at IMH's NAMS, explained that some individuals may have a higher risk of developing addiction due to factors such as genetic predisposition or existing mental health conditions. Cannabis can not only trigger these underlying conditions but also exacerbate mental health symptoms.

Building Trust Takes Time
Supporting a loved one through addiction can be challenging, but trust is key to helping them feel safe, supported, and motivated to seek change.

It doesn’t always have to be a deep conversation. Sometimes, it’s as simple as sending a text, sharing an emoji, or sitting quietly with them. Small gestures can speak volumes.

What’s one small way you show support to a loved one? Share in the comments.
