Happy 55th National Day and Majulah Singapura!

The photo – from the late 60s - children squatting over the school drain for compulsory daily teeth-brushing. Growing up was so different then - but also fun for the kids.

Every time 9th August comes around, I think of how it was in the early years.

Remember the campaigns? They were serious business.

Many had to do with public health and nutrition.

No spitting.

‘Wash your hands’ - a campaign five decades ago, not just now with Covid. Everyone was told to do so, especially after going to the toilet.

These were big issues then, as standards of hygiene were low and diseases widespread.

Every primary school child had to drink milk in school, after the government found that most were short of essential vitamins and minerals. Many kids had never had milk. So we gathered each day by the school drains, and had milk poured into our cups.

Kids who were malnourished were sometimes given the pyramid-shaped Magnolia milk packs to take home. By the way, Magnolia milk was a treat in those days. It came from the cows in Dairy Farm in Upper Bukit Timah - the only farm that successfully reared cows from a temperate climate in the equatorial region.

The story of why we had a teeth brushing campaign is interesting. The government found that many in the first batch of National Servicemen had bad teeth. Surveys then showed that one out of two Singaporeans did not brush their teeth. Many of us might recall too that it was common in those days for people, even in their 40s, to have a few missing teeth. (Some people used gold caps, and would flash a smile to show that they were doing well in life.)

Primary school children were given a 10-cent toothbrush (which would have been quite good in those days) and a 15-cent big plastic mug, and had to line up side-by-side by the shallow longkang outside their classroom blocks. Usually before classes started in the morning or after recess. Teachers would demonstrate how to brush your teeth properly.

It was a different time.
