Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) starts in the nasopharyngeal which is an air-filled space at the deep end of the nose. Hence by the time some one presents to the doctor with nose bleeds, it is usually late stage.

Some facts to note about NPC :
1. The common presenting symptom is neck lump or lymph node
2. Other presenting symptoms are
- Blood stained saliva or mucus
- Persistent Ear block or hearing loss
- One sided tinnitus or ringing sound in the ear
3. Diagnosis is usually made by visualizing it through a nose scope.
4. A biopsy is done in the clinic to confirm the diagnosis.
5. NPC is sensitive to radiotherapy and hence many patients still has good outcome and prognosis despite advance stage. But prompt treatment is necessary.

Please consult your family doctor for a review if unsure. Your GP will refer to an ENT doctor if needed.
