Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) starts in the nasopharyngeal which is an air-filled space at the deep end of the nose. Hence by the time some one presents to the doctor with nose bleeds, it is usually late stage.

Some facts to note about NPC :
1. The common presenting symptom is neck lump or lymph node
2. Other presenting symptoms are
- Blood stained saliva or mucus
- Persistent Ear block or hearing loss
- One sided tinnitus or ringing sound in the ear
3. Diagnosis is usually made by visualizing it through a nose scope.
4. A biopsy is done in the clinic to confirm the diagnosis.
5. NPC is sensitive to radiotherapy and hence many patients still has good outcome and prognosis despite advance stage. But prompt treatment is necessary.

Please consult your family doctor for a review if unsure. Your GP will refer to an ENT doctor if needed.

Attended GP plus 7th anniversary’s dinner. Meet many colleagues and friends. In GP plus coop, we believe in setting a reliable network of primary and tertiary care among GPs and Specialists to give the best care for our patients. We also celebrate the retirement of an GP , Tan Geok Jim. We also have excellent CME talk by Dr Wong Wen Kin, Dr Gowreeson and Dr Leong Chuo Ren.. it was a great evening of celebration and learning. Thank you Coop for organizing the celebration and CME talk.

Am honored to be invited to the opening of the last ward ie Ward 6C, the Royal Suite, in Mount E Orchard with all the senior doctors!

This marks the end of ward renovation. Many thanks to our patients who tolerated the disturbances and noise. Kudos to the nurses because they were in the ward the entire time. We used to joke - make an appointment to see me if they need their ears/hearing checked. Fortunately, none came!😬 The hospital did a good job in preventing noise injury. They had been monitoring the decibel closely to make sure the renovation noise isn’t too loud. Well done hospital! 👍

“Cradle to Memory” Exhibition.

If you are in Mount Elizabeth Hospital, don’t miss this! The hospital underwent its major renovation since 1979. It’s near completion. Many memories were made in this building. As part of retaining this memory of the people and the items used in the past, NUS Division of Industrial Design was engaged to recycle items used frequently in the hospital into artistic pierces.

The students did an amazing job! Bedside OT lamps made into artistic shades; wall tiles into musical pieces; OT gowns into cushions. Call bells and old wall clocks were some of the items remake into unbelievably creative pieces! Each creation also tells the stories of the people using them over the years!
