Is marble a top skin allergen? No ... but watch your household cleaner!

Touching the marble on your countertop or walking around on marble floors is unlikely to cause an allergic skin reaction. Household cleaners would tend to be the bigger risk as many contain several top contact allergens such as fragrance, methylisothiazolinone or other allergen preservatives, cocamidopropyl betaine or other amido-amine surfactants, dyes, or allergenic antimicrobials like formaldehyde releasers.

Natural, organic, “clean,” or “vegan” options also tend to have common skin allergens, most typically essential oils or flower or fruit extracts. Try any of our body washes really diluted in water and poured into a spray bottle. Other mixtures like vinegar and water or baking soda and water are also good options.

If you are involved in marble works, the bigger issue is inhalation of the silica which can lead to severe lung disease. Skin can also develop an irritant reaction from the dust. If you work in marble mining, you could also be exposed to trace amounts of nickel or cobalt in the soil that may or may not be a problem, depending on your sensitivity and level of exposure.

Is my gadget screen a skin allergen? Nope. But watch that gadget case!

Some of the materials that go into typical gadget screens might be top contact allergens (such as nickel in metal casings) but glass is not a common skin allergen. It is even less of a concern with laptop screens and monitors because they’re not frequently touched.

If you’re using a touch screen such as on a tablet or phone, the rest of the gadget or your phone or tablet case could have metals, rubber, or other top contact allergens and these, yes, are common causes of skin reactions.

There is another big skin concern from gadget screens: hyperpigmentation. Try a sun and light screen daily like Armada or Stay-On-Point! every day, even indoors, and especially when in front of a screen.

A playground as a top skin allergen? You wouldn’t see it in a patch test but … yup. You don’t need to avoid them entirely, though. They’re important (and way fun! :)

Some common contact allergens to look out for include:
🛝 Rubber on handles, mats, seats, toys, dyes, arts and crafts supplies (paint, glue, clay)
🌿 Plants and the pesticides used on them
🧼 Hand sanitizer with fragrance or perfumed hand soap
👕 Other things that could be causing skin problems for you or your child: brightly colored or stretchy clothing, helmets, safety gear, and certain materials in shoes.

How to make playtime safe for allergic skin? Get a patch test (just because something is a top skin allergen doesn’t mean it’s one of your allergens). Try a barrier between your child’s skin and playthings or plants. Bring your own allergen-free hand sanitizer like Kid Gloves and hand soap like Coo & Clean. Shower and change clothing as soon as you get home to wash off allergens and irritants.

Is Imidazolidinyl Urea a top skin allergen? YES.

Imidazolidinyl Urea is a formaldehyde releaser. It is relatively safer than other allergen preservatives (it tends to cause reactions less than other allergenic preservatives), which is why it’s a favorite preservatives for products labeled “safe,” “safe for sensitive skin,” or “hypoallergenic” ... and why you should be guided by your patch test results instead of product claims.

It is found in MANY products (Imidazolidinyl Urea is one of the most widely used antimicrobial preservatives in the world), from baby care to bath care, hair care and hair styling products, wipes, cosmetics (lots of makeup, from foundations to blushes, eye makeup, mascara, brow gels, and more), makeup removers, tanning and bronzing products, to skincare, and some industrial products.

Note: all VMV Hypoallergenics products have a VH-Rating (a bit like an SPF but for skin safety). This number shows how many allergens out of the total number of published allergens are omitted from a formulation. Importantly, if an allergen is included in the product, the VH-Rating is lower AND the allergen is underlined and clearly marked by an asterisk in the ingredients list. If it is not an ingredient that you patch tested positive to, you can use the product. If it is, you know to choose another product. VMV does not use imidazolidinyl urea, DALU, quaterniums, other formaldehyde-releasers, or other allergenic preservatives.

Is Dandruff Shampoo a top skin allergen? YES. You might actually not have dandruff but an allergic reaction!

Some of the top skin allergens that regularly appear in dandruff shampoos include (and these are just a few!) amigo-amine surfactants, dyes, blue dye, fragrance, quaterniums, etc. Your flaking and itching could be a reaction to such allergens in your dandruff shampoo as well as other hair care or styling products, hair dye, or headwear such as helmets, wraps, or scarves.

While the typical medications found in dandruff shampoo can be irritating, they don’t tend to be common causes of allergic contact dermatitis. Because they tend to be antimicrobials, however, use such products with your dermatologist’s guidance to avoid further irritating an already-irritated scalp and to avoid causing a microbial imbalance that could lead to barrier issues or other problems. A dermatologist also ensures that you’re using the right actives for what you have (which might not even be “dandruff!)

What about natural anti-dandruff shampoos or making my own? While some natural remedies like tea tree oil have been shown to be helpful many (including tea tree oil) are published as top contact allergens. A notable exception is pure, single-sourced, first-cold-pressed virgin coconut oil (more on this below) which has several clinical studies showing its efficacy as a microbiome-safe, broad-spectrum antifungal, antibacterial, and antimicrobial. It is also a well known barrier-reparative anti-inflammatory.

Cacao, Cocoa: Top Skin Allergen or Not? The answer is: Not ... but can cause allergic reactions.

While there are case reports of allergic or systemic contact dermatitis to cacao (the raw, unprocessed version of cocoa), cocoa, or chocolate, they are still relatively rare. The risk can be higher if your job requires you to handle these items frequently, such as if you work in the food industry.

It is possible to have a food allergy to these substances (although this, too, seems quite rare). This can be confirmed by a RAST, prick, or scratch test with an allergist. As a rule B-cell and T-cell reactions (skin) do not cross over (there is quite a bit of difference between skin and other types of allergies). But there are exceptions. If you think you might be sensitive to cacao, cocoa, or chocolate and have a history of naso-brochial, food, or other allergies as well as sensitive skin, get both a B-cell test with an allergist AND a skin patch test with a dermatologist.

For skin in particular: be cautious if you patch tested positive to nickel or benzyl alcohol, both of which occur naturally in cacao. Chocolate might have other additives that are also top skin allergens such as cinnamon, vanilla, citruses, fruits, Balsam of Peru, and other flavors (many of which are related to fragrance), as well as dyes and certain preservatives. And look out for chocolate as a scent added to skincare or cosmetics products, too.

See VMVinSKIN.com for tips if your job entails handling these substances.
