Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH) is a silent, serious disease and it often starts where most people least expect it - the heart.

When the small arteries in the lungs narrow or become blocked, the heart is forced to pump harder just to keep blood flowing. Over time, this strain can lead to heart failure.

PAH progresses slowly, making it easy to miss — but impossible to ignore.
Having support, awareness and early care can change lives! ❤️

We’re grateful to have an opportunity to play a part in raising awareness with Mediacorp on this rare condition and helping more people understand its impact.

2 Key Strategies to Keep Your Heart Healthy

· Get Moving - Regular exercise strengthens your heart, lowers blood pressure, and improves circulation. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week.

· Go Plant-Based - A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and seeds supports heart health and reduces the risk of heart disease. Say goodbye to processed meats and hello to colourful, fibre-packed plates!

· A stronger heart starts with what's on your plate.

· Small changes today = a stronger heart tomorrow.

💔 Did You Know? Broken Heart Syndrome is Real!

It’s not just a figure of speech — Broken Heart Syndrome, also known as Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy, is a real heart condition triggered by intense stress or grief.

It can feel just like a heart attack, with chest pain, shortness of breath, arm pain and sweating — but it's stress, not blocked arteries, causing it.

Triggers of broken heart syndrome :
😢 Emotional shock (Loss of a loved one, traumatic event)
📉 Sudden stress
🫀 Temporary heart muscle weakness

The good news? Most people recover fully — but don’t ignore the signs.

It's World Stroke Day!

This year's focus emphasizes understanding lesser-known risk factors, such as Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) - a small, flap-like opening in the heart that can increase the risk of certain types of strokes.
A PFO is present in about 25% to 33% of adults. In some cases, it can allow blood clots to bypass the lungs (where clots are usually filtered) and travel to the brain, causing a stroke.

Understanding PFO : If you've had an unexplained stroke, discuss the possibility of PFO with one of our doctors at AHVC. Early detection and treatment, such as medications or closure procedures, can significantly reduce the risk of recurrence.

If you would like to understand more, you can read our article over here - https://www.ahvc.com.sg/understanding-the-relationship-between-pfo-and-stroke/
