As medical personnel, it is sometimes hard for us to explain to patients that we too are human, and we too deserve to rest.

I understand that to everyone who sees me, their medical conditions are foremost in their minds, to the extent that they do not view other's well-being as being important. I do understand.

However please bear in mind that everyone, doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals are under great duress, and sometimes, we need a rest too.

Cartilage injuries in the knee joint are common amongst active individuals of all ages. Patients with such injuries may have knee pain, and occasionally a sensation of knee "locking".

Unfortunately, Hyaline cartilage, which is cartilage found only in certain joints in the human body, is irreplaceable when lost to injury.

If left alone, holes in the cartilage can eventually lead to joint degeneration, also known as arthritis.

While the body is unable to regenerate lost cartilage, certain medical procedures can induce healing to help patch these holes.

Such procedures are typically keyhole surgical techniques, with downtime as short as a few days.

Here are Advance Orthopaedics, we have a team of experienced doctors, and nurses, who are well-equipped to assist in your recovery from such injuries.

Let us help you.

With our ageing population, hip fractures have become increasingly prevalent. Proper treatment of hip fractures requires a dedicated team of doctors, nurses and physical therapists. Early surgery for hip fractures can reduce mortality, which has been reported to be as high as 20-25% at one year.

As the previous orthopaedic lead for one of the busiest hip fracture units in Singapore, I am uniquely poised to aid in your recovery after a hip fracture.

At Advance Orthopaedics, I will aid you with follow-up, surveillance and rehabilitation after hip fracture surgery.

Back pain is an exceedingly common complaint amongst adults in Singapore. Most adults in their 30s and 40s would have experienced some form of neck and back pain throughout their lives.

Back pain is typically multi-factorial, and can be arise from muscles and ligaments, joints in the spine, and the intervertebral discs.

Most of the patients with back pain have pain arising from muscles and ligaments, so-called musculoskeletal back pain.

However, a significant proportion of patients with back problems may manifest pain elsewhere in the body, such as in patients who have referred pain and nerve pain.

Spinal pain arising from the joints in the spine can be referred to the buttock region.

Many patients come to see me complaining of buttock pain which they think arises from the hip, when in reality, their pain is probably referred from the joints in the spine.

Some patients with back pain may also suffer from pain in the lower limbs, which maybe caused by nerve compression, and this may be accompanied by cramps, numbness and lower limb weakness.

In severe cases, back pain can even be associated with urinary and bowel incontinence.

If you are a back pain sufferer, do not worry, we stand ready to aid in your recovery.

Osteoarthritis is the final stage in many joint diseases treated by Orthopaedic surgeons.

Osteoarthritis refers to the loss of joint cartilage over a joint surface, and can be caused by many different processes. Fractures, infections, ligament injuries and sprains can all result in osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis is debilitating and can lead to devastating loss of joint function.

If you suffer from injuries at a young age, you may be at risk of osteoarthritis when you become older.

Act early and have your injuries evaluated and treated to avoid downstream loss of independence and function.
