Polypodium leucotomos extract (Fernblock®) from the Fern plant is a very well-studied photoprotectant - it can be taken orally or applied topically to help prevent skin cancers and photo-aging.

In its oral form, such photoprotecting supplements act as an antioxidant against free radicals caused by UV radiation. Studies have shown that they can reduce redness, sunburn and DNA damage.

Commonly asked question: Why didn't Pico laser clear my pigmentations?
Pico lasers are not the end-all and be-all in the treatment of pigmentations.

The treatment of pigmentation require:
- a correct diagnosis of the pigmentary problem.
- a combination of depigmenting creams and anti-oxidants, with a combination of the appropriate types of lasers to address different biologic causes of pigmentation; sometimes additional combination with chemical peels and certain oral medications are used.
- a lot of patience, discipline and compliance to treatment intervals and strict sun-protection.

As such, Pico Laser alone (Pico Laser Monotherapy) may not always be the solution for many patients with pigmentations. Furthermore, the Asian skin, typically Fitzpatrick Types III, IV and V, are very tricky to treat. Strong laser settings with the most powerful lasers may not necessarily be the solution.

Individualised, combination treatment protocols are the way to go.
