A new amendment to the Crime & Policing Bill could criminalise parents fleeing abuse with their children overseas — carrying up to 7 years in prison.

Roz Osborne, CEO of GlobalARRK, warns:
“Many mothers are unaware that taking their children to a safe place could be considered illegal … This could have serious and lasting consequences for children and their protective parent.”

We will be working hard to ensure that the lived experiences of the Stuck Parents we support are highlighted ahead of any change.

I wanted to share a quick update with this community.

Singapore Expat Life is currently in the process of being built.
My aim is to grow this page thoughtfully — as a place to raise awareness, connect expats, and help people understand where to go for appropriate and safe support when living abroad.

Support for expat families can often feel fragmented, and this page is intended to be a starting point — not a place for legal advice, but a space for shared experiences, general information, and signposting to helpful resources and organisations.

As the community grows, I hope it will also become a place where people can contribute what they’ve learned and help others know where to turn.

I’ve also set up a WhatsApp group for those who would like to stay connected more easily and receive updates as this community develops.

👉 You can join the FreeU WhatsApp group https://chat.whatsapp.com/HRGEfM48arC0AwXZZ9TI1p?mode=gi_t

Thank you for being part of this from the beginning — this is very much a work in progress, and I appreciate your support as it grows.

A Smart Expat’s Guide: 🗡️ Slash Your Income Taxes with an SRS

Hey there, savvy expats! 🌍

Let’s talk about a magical way to save on taxes while building your future nest egg for retirement — the Supplementary Retirement Scheme (SRS)!

What’s SRS All About? 🤔

SRS is a deferred tax scheme which helps unlocking tax savings on your hard earned income. It’s designed to help you save for retirement while giving you awesome tax savings right now. Who doesn’t love paying less tax?

Eligibility

Foreigners, PR and Singapore Citizens above age of 18 years with tax residency in Singapore and an assessable tax income.

The Tax-Saving Magic 🎩

1. Immediate Tax Relief on Contributions:💰
Every dollar you contribute to your SRS account reduces your taxable income. That means you pay less tax now!

2. Tax-Deferred Investment Growth: 💹
The investments within your SRS account benefit from tax-deferred compounding. This means your investment gains grow without being taxed, allowing your money to potentially grow faster until you withdraw the funds.

3. Long-Term Benefits: 📊
The more you contribute, the more you save. It’s a great way to build a retirement fund while enjoying significant tax savings over the years.

4. Tax on Withdrawals: 💸
Only 50% of the withdrawals are taxable if you withdraw after reaching the statutory retirement age of 62 years. Spread over max 10 years from first withdrawal to maximise tax benefits. If you are a foreigner and leave Singapore for good, the early withdrawal penalty before retirement of 5% is waivered but the full amount remains taxable.

Real-Life Example

If you are earning $100,000 a year, by contributing the annual SRS cap of $SGD 35,700 if you are a non-PR foreigner (or $15,300 if you are PR/Singapore Citizen), you effectively lower your taxable income to $64,300. That’s a nice chunk of change you’re not paying tax on!

Ready to Maximise Your SRS? 💪

Max out your SRS contributions every year to enjoy consistent tax relief and build a comfortable retirement fund.

If you have questions about how to set up and invest your SRS funds or need help balancing your financial goals, send me a message 🎯

Stay savvy, expats!

Checklist for Settling into Singapore

1. Secure Housing 🏠
House hunting in Singapore can be like dating—sometimes you have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find the perfect one! 🐸 Start by exploring neighbourhoods online and keep an eye out for those "good deals" that aren't just cleverly worded traps. Most landlords require 2-year leases and charge you a set repair fees if things break. 🛠️

Pro tip: Always check if there's a hawker centre nearby. Your stomach will thank you later! Websites like PropertyGuru, Propnex and 99.co & SRX are helpful for property searches.

2. Set Up a Local Bank Account 💳
When it comes to banking DBS, UOB & OCBC are the players in town.

Pro Tip: Before deciding, check with your employer —sometimes they have a favourite bank where your salary will land. It’s like knowing which party your pay-check will be attending! 🎉

Bonus Tip: For an extra layer of security, consider opening a second bank account as a backup plan. Because let’s face it, in the world of finance, it’s always good to have a safety net!

3. Register for Health Insurance 🏥
Think of this as your personal bodyguard against unexpected medical bills, which are jaw-droppingly expensive in Singapore.

But here's the kicker: Don’t rely solely on corporate insurance plans. With the job market being as dynamic as it is—think company redundancies (or headhunters if you are lucky)—your family's coverage could be up in the air if your employment situation changes.

Need help navigating your options? I’ve got you covered! Contact me for advice and support to find the perfect cost effective health insurance plan for you. Let’s make sure you’re well-protected without breaking the bank! 📞

4. Join Expat Social Groups 🌍
Joining expat groups is like finding your tribe in a new place. Connect with others who share your experiences and swap tips. Goldmines of advice and friendship, helping you navigate the city.

For a bit of extra fun, check out local clubs like the British Club, Hollandse Club, Swiss Club or others that match your interests. It’s a great way to meet new people.

5. Staying in Touch📱
Getting a local phone plan is like picking the perfect sidekick for your everyday adventures. With Singtel or StarHub, you’ll have all the calls, texts, and data you need to keep up with your friends, family, and all those important sightseeing videos.

6. EZ-Link Card for Easy Travel 🚌
Get an EZ-Link card and you'll be zipping around Singapore like a transportation pro. It’s your VIP pass for smooth rides on MRTs and buses—no cash hassle! Pick up at the airport, MRT station or any convenience store, and don’t forget to top it up. With Singapore’s super-efficient transport system, you’ll love commuting as much as exploring!
Pro-tip: Download the SBS app for live journey planning.

7. Getting a Helper 🦸‍♀️
Bringing a helper into your home is like adding a super assistant to your team! They can help with cooking, cleaning, and more, making daily life run smoothly. You’ll need to apply to MOM for a work permit, purchase maid insurance and complete the Employing a Foreign Domestic Worker (EFDW) course before hiring one.

8. Set Up a Local Library Card 📚
Unlock a whole world of knowledge and resources for your family. With access to books, e-books, and community events, it’s your passport to cultural enrichment and endless learning. Sign up with the National Library Board (NLB) and start exploring the treasure trove of resources available to you.

9. Familiarise Yourself with Local Customs and Etiquette 🤝 Learning local customs in Singapore is like nailing the perfect party etiquette. Singaporeans value respect and good manners, and they follow the rules closely. Be the charming guest who fits right in by brushing up on these customs and showing you’re respectful and considerate.

Heads-up: Littering, Va**ng and Chewing gum are fineable offences here, so keep it in mind to avoid any surprises.

10. Public Holidays 📅
Don't miss out on Singapore’s public holidays! They’re perfect for experiencing the local culture, joining in celebrations, and enjoying festivals. Embrace these occasions to fully immerse yourself in your new community.

Enjoy your new social scene! 🎉👋
