Our doctors and colleagues recently attended the 4th EVO ICL APAC Experts Summit in Guangzhou, joining ophthalmologists from across the Asia-Pacific region for clinical discussions on refractive surgery developments.

The summit brought together specialists to exchange perspectives on current approaches in vision correction, including lens-based and corneal-based options, and to review long-term clinical data presented by regional colleagues.
Continuing education and peer exchange remain an important part of how our team stays current with evolving clinical evidence. We're glad Dr Julian Theng could represent Eagle Eye Centre and contribute to the regional dialogue.

Your sports gear protects your body, but what about your eyes? 👀

Whether you play badminton, football, tennis, basketball, cycle outdoors or hit the gym, your eyes may be exposed to impact, UV rays, dust, glare and contact lens-related discomfort.

This Sports & Safety Month, take a few small steps to protect your vision:

✅ Wear protective eyewear where appropriate
✅ Use UV-protective sunglasses for outdoor sports
✅ Practise good contact lens hygiene
✅ Avoid wearing contact lenses while swimming
✅ Replace scratched or damaged eyewear
✅ Go for regular eye checks if your vision feels blurry or uncomfortable

For those who feel that glasses or contact lenses get in the way during sports, a refractive evaluation can also help assess whether options such as LASIK, SMILE, PRK / Epi-LASIK or ICL may be suitable.

Read our full sports eye safety guide here:

Suitability for refractive surgery depends on individual eye condition and clinical assessment. Further consultation with an eye doctor may be recommended where appropriate.

Our Director of Glaucoma Services, Dr Desmond Quek, and Director of Optometry, Shandy, spent time with the team at Great Eastern yesterday, sharing on common vision issues and what to look out for.

A few simple reminders:

👓 Blurred vision isn’t just one thing
It could be ageing eyes, cataracts, or even glaucoma — which can be silent early on.

⏳ Don’t wait for symptoms
A quick eye check can catch issues early and protect your vision.

🛡️ Know your coverage
Understanding your insurance makes it easier to take action when needed.

Thanks to Great Eastern for having us; always good to help more people stay on top of their eye health.

A recent Straits Times LIFE article published today highlights how glaucoma can develop quietly, often without obvious symptoms in its early stages.

Read the full article here: https://www.straitstimes.com/life/when-blurry-vision-is-not-just-eye-strain-5-things-to-know-about-glaucoma

The article also features insights from Dr Desmond Quek, Director of Glaucoma Services at Eagle Eye Centre, on how glaucoma develops and why early detection is so important.

Regular comprehensive eye examinations are especially important for individuals aged 40 and above, as well as those with risk factors such as a family history of glaucoma, high myopia, diabetes, eye trauma, obstructive sleep apnoea, or long-term steroid use.

The key takeaway is simple: do not wait for symptoms to appear before getting your eyes checked.

👀 Blurry vision is not always just eye strain.

Glaucoma can develop silently, often without noticeable symptoms in its early stages. That is why regular eye examinations are important, especially for those aged 40 and above, or individuals with risk factors such as a family history of glaucoma, high myopia, diabetes, previous eye trauma, or long-term steroid use.

⏳ Do not wait for symptoms to appear. Early detection matters.

A 40something woman was thought to be too young for glaucoma but more people below age 60 are being diagnosed with glaucoma in Singapore. Risk factors include age, genetics and chronic diseases. Regular eye exams are recommended. Read more at straitstimes.com. Read more at straitstimes.com.
