In December 2019, 17 year old Avi Schiffman built a real-time website to report on latest statistics of COVID-19 accurately. “It was hard to get clear, concise, and accurate information on what was going on, and I wanted to do something to fix this,” said Schiffmann.

Schiffmann’s website scrapes information from many different sources, including official government health organizations (local, national, and international), and trustworthy news outlets. He relies on an online community of news curators to help with this. He also coded the website to crosscheck data to make sure it is accurate.

“It would also be a way to help with global health, which is something that’s needed when not all governments are the nicest or transparent, and it is hard to get information,” he said.

Fight against COVID19: THE SCIENTIST

Dr Helen Y. Chu started testing for the COVID-19 in early Feb. Even after Federal Officers told her to stop, she found a Washington teenager contracted COVID19 with no travel history - realizing her fears that COVID-19 had spread locally, silently.

In this craft activity, children can participate in "finding the virus" and destroy it with alcohol and soap respectively. Parents can also use the slides to discuss what children learn. Craft Video: https://youtu.be/mKzGmOfWtXM

His suspicion is that the young immune system and its efficient T cells do a superior job of responding to SARS-CoV-2. A 2010 study led by Subbarao also stressed the importance of CD4+ helper T cells, which stimulate B cells to make antibodies against pathogens, in controlling SARS-CoV infection in mice.

“It could be that the type of T cell that dominates early in life is better at repelling this virus,” says immunologist Kingston Mills of Trinity College Dublin. He also proposes that young children’s higher production of a type of T cell called Th2 might guard against runaway inflammatory responses to SARS-CoV-2. Perlman doesn’t support the proposed role of a bias toward Th2 cells in the case of this viral infection, but he does agree that an immune overreaction is problematic.

“The innate response is delayed in the elderly, so ends up playing catch-up and is exuberant,” Perlman writes in an email to The Scientist.

Infected children may harbor SARS-CoV-2 while showing less-severe symptoms than adults. Their young immune systems, ACE2 receptor levels, and even exposure to other coronaviruses might play a role in their resilience.

Joytingle will be highlighting the helpers who are flattening the curve through actions big and small. We could do with good tidings to break the gloom.

Whenever possible, each lesson comes with 1) craft session (whenever possible) which you can make with household or low-cost materials + instructions video online; and 2) discussion cards between parent and child on what they can learn from these helpers and do.

First video coming up!

“When I was a little boy and something bad happened in the news, my mother would tell me to look for the helpers,” he once said on his beloved show, Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood. “‘You’ll always find people helping,’ she’d say. And I found that that’s true. In fact, it’s one of the best things about our wonderful world.”
