Teeth don’t stay the same shade forever — and that’s completely normal.

Over time, it’s natural for teeth to appear a little darker. This can be due to subtle changes in enamel, consistency of oral hygiene as well as everyday habits like coffee, tea, or red wine.

For some, it’s gradual and hardly noticeable. For others, it becomes something they start to pay more attention to.

The important thing is understanding why it’s happening — as this can vary from person to person.

If you’ve noticed changes and are curious about what may be contributing and what could potentially help, a consultation with your dentist may help provide a clearer picture of your individual situation.

Contact sport places unique demands on the teeth and jaw.

A well-fitted mouthguard is a simple way to help reduce the risk of dental injury during play.

Understanding the differences between mouthguard types can help you make an informed choice for yourself or your child.

If you’re unsure what’s most appropriate, our team is always happy to guide you.

As dental partner to , our team visited some of the young rugby players this past weekend to chat with them about their oral health.

Dr Josh and Dr Clara, together with Skye, spoke about daily brushing habits, protecting teeth during sport, and the importance of regular dental reviews as children grow.

They also shared information on early orthodontic assessment, including how a review around age seven allows dentists to monitor jaw growth and the development of adult teeth over time.

Thank you to Centaurs for hosting us!

When is the right age for braces?

Many children begin comprehensive braces treatment around 12–13 years old, when most of the adult teeth have erupted.

However, timing is not the same for every child.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic assessment around age 7. At this stage, a mix of baby and adult teeth are present, and jaw growth is still developing. This allows orthodontists to identify concerns such as crowding, crossbites, erupting teeth that may be stuck, or limited space — and to plan appropriately.

An early assessment does not automatically mean early braces. In many cases, it simply means monitoring growth and guiding development at the right time.

If you’re unsure about your child’s timing, a consultation can provide clarity and reassurance.

“How long do I really need to wear my retainer?”

It’s one of the most common questions we hear after orthodontic treatment.

Teeth naturally have a tendency to move over time. Even once braces or aligners are removed, the surrounding bone and tissues continue to settle. Retainers help support stability while everything adapts.

For many patients, this means:
• Wearing retainers full-time initially
• Transitioning to night wear
• Continuing night wear long term to maintain alignment

Stopping too early can allow gradual shifting — sometimes before it’s even noticeable.

Orthodontic care doesn’t end when appliances come off. Retention is an important part of protecting the result you’ve worked towards.

If you’re unsure about your current retainer routine, our team can review it with you and provide guidance tailored to your situation.
