Heart attack? Heart failure? They sound similar, but they’re not the same.
A heart attack strikes when a coronary artery is blocked, starving part of the heart of oxygen.
Heart failure, on the other hand, develops when the heart muscle weakens and can no longer pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs.
In some cases, the two are linked: heart failure can develop after a severe heart attack, particularly when the left side of the heart has been significantly damaged.
Recognising warning signs early can make a life-saving difference. See a cardiologist right away if you experience:
• Chest pain or tightness
• Unusual fatigue and weakness
• Fast or irregular heartbeat
• Nausea or dizziness
• Shortness of breath
