"Responding" is a conscious choice whereas "reacting" is immediate and instinctive. Knowing how to respond wisely and effectively often starts with awareness, such as having sufficient knowledge of what you are facing or knowing what your important values are.

However, in certain situations, we may not know how to respond and instead react to protect ourselves and our ego. This might cause us to regret our actions and have a sense of losing control or helplessness.
