The National University Cancer Institute, Singapore (NCIS) is a national specialist centre for cancer under the National University Health System (NUHS). It is the only comprehensive public cancer centre in Singapore treating both paediatric and adult cancers in one facility. Located at the National University Hospital (NUH), we offer a broad spectrum of cancer care with expertise in prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and palliative care. Besides improving the quality of care to cancer patients, the NCIS also trains and nurtures the next generation of healthcare professionals in this field of medicine. Working closely with scientists to advance cancer medicine, the NCIS hopes to translate basic research discoveries in the laboratory to applied research for clinical trials and eventually to better treatments. While a cure remains elusive for multiple myeloma, the treatment and outcomes for it has improved tremendously over the last decade with a current median survival rate of 9.1 years, a substantial increase from 3-4 years two decades ago.

Prof Chng Wee Joo, Senior Consultant, Dept. of Haematology-Oncology, NCIS discussed recent advancements and the future outlook for multiple myeloma treatment. Among the breakthroughs shared was a promising trial that involved using a combination of four drugs in younger patients fit for stem cell transplantation, where results showed remission periods of up to 17 years before first progression.

NCIS is proud to be part of the CLARION research programme which was recently awarded a $25 million grant to transform lung cancer outcomes in Asian populations.

Spearheading the effort from NCIS is Dr Huang Yiqing, Consultant, Department of Haematology-Oncology and one of the programmeโ€™s co-leads.

Most Asian patients are still diagnosed at stage four, where treatment options are limited and resistance develops quickly. This research aims to change that by catching the disease earlier and delivering therapies that work better, for longer.

Weโ€™re honoured to collaborate with partners from and on this major step forward for lung cancer care.

Thank you for joining us at Health Together Carnival 2025!

Our NCIS nurses were on-site to guide the public through breast self-examination (BSE) techniquesโ€” empowering individuals with knowledge and confidence to take charge of their breast health.

In line with the carnival's focus on preventive health and community well-being, we were proud to be part of this vibrant event that brought together health screenings, wellness activities, and expert-led educationโ€”all in one place.

Let's continue taking small, proactive steps toward better health-together.
