The National University Cancer Institute, Singapore (NCIS) is a national specialist centre for cancer under the National University Health System (NUHS). It is the only comprehensive public cancer centre in Singapore treating both paediatric and adult cancers in one facility. Located at the National University Hospital (NUH), we offer a broad spectrum of cancer care with expertise in prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and palliative care. Besides improving the quality of care to cancer patients, the NCIS also trains and nurtures the next generation of healthcare professionals in this field of medicine. Working closely with scientists to advance cancer medicine, the NCIS hopes to translate basic research discoveries in the laboratory to applied research for clinical trials and eventually to better treatments. At the NCIS Wellbeing Centre, we came together to commemorate Lunar New Year and World Cancer Day through creativity, nourishment, and shared joy. From festive crafts to healthy yusheng, every moment reflected the strength of the community.

Following on from Part 1, we’re back with Adj A/Prof Ian Tan and Dr Jarrod Tan. In this instalment, they walk us through early symptoms people often miss, explain what’s normal (and what isn’t), and clear up common misconceptions that stop individuals from going for screening.

What would you do if a genetic test showed a higher cancer risk?

Ms Ong Pei Yi, Senior Genetics Counsellor, NCIS, said that undergoing preventive mastectomy or salpingo-oophorectomy to reduce cancer risk is a physically and emotionally challenging decision for women.

As genetic testing becomes more accessible, experts say it is important for patients to receive proper counselling to understand their options before making life-changing decisions.

Celebrating International Women’s Day at Yuhua Community Centre!

NCIS was glad to be part of the community event, engaging residents through an educational booth on cervical cancer awareness. Through interactive myth-and-fact activities, the public learned key information on cervical cancer prevention, screening, and the importance of early detection.

Every conversation brings us one step closer to empowering women to take charge of their health.
