Discover More About Premyopia and Learn How to Delay Myopia Onset

Curious about what premyopia is? 👀 Premyopia is a term used to describe an early stage in the development of short-sightedness, or myopia. At this stage, a person's eyes are not yet clinically myopic, but certain factors—such as their eye power or family history—suggest an increased risk of developing myopia in the near future. Premyopia is a critical stage where early action can make all the difference for your child's eye health.

Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) refers to the educational activities nurses participate in after completing their initial nursing education, to maintain and enhance their knowledge and skills. This ongoing learning process is crucial for nurses to stay updated on the latest advancements in healthcare, ensuring they can provide safe and effective patient care.

Dr Christine Yau, Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist and Head, Neuro-ophthalmology at International Eye Cataract Retina Centre gave a CNE lecture titled "Demystifying Common Eye Treatments" to nurses and doctors from the Farrer Park Hospital's Medical Urgency Clinic on 28 July 2023 as part of the nurse's CNE programme.

Sodium hyaluronate eye drops have become increasingly popular in ophthalmology for their ability to relieve the symptoms of dry eye and other ocular surface disorders. Among the available products, Rxolve Ultra Sodium Hyaluronate 0.3% Eye Drops stand out for their advanced formulation and high concentration of sodium hyaluronate.

Sodium hyaluronate is the sodium salt form of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan found throughout the human body, especially in connective, epithelial, and neural tissues. Within the eye, it is a key component of the vitreous humour and plays a significant role in maintaining moisture and supporting the health of ocular tissues.

When used in eye drops, sodium hyaluronate acts as a lubricant and moisturiser, mimicking the natural tears and providing a soothing effect to the ocular surface. The concentration of sodium hyaluronate in eye drops can influence their lubricating properties, with higher concentrations offering more substantial and longer-lasting hydration.

We are grateful to Zann Goo from Rxilient who gave an educational talk and training to our ophthalmologists and staff on Rxolve Ultra which has preservative-free sodium hyaluronate 0.3% in a patented multi-dose 10ml bottle that maintains sterility for up to one year after opening, ensuring convenience, safety, and cost-effectiveness. The eye drop is suitable for contact-lens users.

Poster Presentation on "Prophylactic Treatment of Childhood Myopia - A Game-Changer in Combating the Scourge of Myopia?" at the International Myopia Society Meeting

Adj A/Prof Kah Guan Au Eong and his collaborators Dr Deborah Lee and Dr Jonathan Au Eong were excited to share their insights at the 2nd International Myopia Society Meeting on 19 July 2025 in Singapore National Eye Centre / Singapore Eye Research Institute. 🌍✨ The authors highlighted the potential evidence-based strategies to intervene earlier for children who are not yet myopic to delay the onset of myopia and reshape the future of paediatric eye health. Early, targeted strategies can delay or even prevent myopia onset, giving our next generation healthier eyes and good vision. Grateful to connect with brilliant colleagues and drive innovation in myopia care.

A very warm welcome to our neurol-ophthalmologist Dr Christine Yau!

What is a neuro-ophthalmologist?

A neuro-ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who specialises in the diagnosis and management of visual problems that are related to the nervous system, rather than to the eyes themselves. These specialists are uniquely trained at the intersection of neurology and ophthalmology, handling complex conditions that often require expertise in both fields. Their role is crucial for patients whose vision issues stem from neurological causes, or whose eye problems may be an early indicator of neurological disease.

The Role of a Neuro-Ophthalmologist

A neuro-ophthalmologist manages a wide array of conditions that affect vision, eye movements and the connection between the eyes and the brain. Besides dealing with eye diseases and surgeries like other general ophthalmologists, a neuro-ophthalmologist deals with disorders that involve the optic nerve, the visual pathways in the brain, and the muscles and nerves controlling eye movement.

Many neuro-ophthalmological disorders do not originate within the eyeball itself, but rather from issues affecting the nerves, brain, or muscles that control visual function. Therefore, neuro-ophthalmologists often collaborate with neurologists, neurosurgeons, endocrinologists, rheumatologists, and other specialists to diagnose and treat complex cases.
