Cervical Cancer Awareness Month: Stay Informed, Stay Prepared
January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. It is a good time to understand how cervical cancer develops and how early checks play a role in womenβs health.
Cervical cancer is caused by human papilloma virus (HPV) and usually develops slowly and may not cause noticeable symptoms in its early stages.
Regular screening (PAP smear or HPV DNA test) is recommended.
Screening detects changes in the cells or the presence of the HPV virus.
Routine screening and HPV vaccination are recommended for prevention of cervical cancer. A GP can explain what screening involves and how often screening should be done (international guidelines for cervical cancer screening).
