🏋️‍♂️ Muscle loss isn’t just part of growing older — there’s a lot you can do to stay strong.

Here are simple habits that help prevent or slow down sarcopenia:

✔ Eat enough protein — eggs, tofu, fish, dairy, chicken
✔ Move more — walking, stair climbing, light exercises
✔ Stay engaged — physically, mentally, and socially

It’s never too early (or too late) to care for your muscles.

If you or someone you care for is starting to feel weaker, come by for a chat with our team.

💬 We’re here to support healthy ageing — one step at a time.

I am happy to update that our recent COVID-19 wave is subsiding.

When the wave started in late April, we saw estimated weekly infections climb to about 26,400 cases. Our healthcare institutions experienced increased patient load, with daily COVID-19 hospitalisations reaching around 174 cases.

The good news is that ICU cases remained consistently low throughout this wave, staying at just about 2 to 3 cases daily. This shows how our healthcare system has built up stronger resilience in managing COVID-19.

Latest data shows encouraging trends: estimated weekly infections have dropped to 15,300 cases, and hospitalisation numbers have decreased to about 118 cases daily. Our wastewater surveillance readings have also declined, supporting this downturn.

This experience reminds us that COVID-19 waves, like seasonal influenza, can still put pressure on our healthcare system. While we have become more resilient in managing these surges, we must continue to fortify our defences and prepare for future waves or any new pandemics.

We will keep monitoring the situation closely, particularly the emergence of new variants, and update the public accordingly.

Sarcopenia is a condition where we gradually lose muscle mass and strength over time. It often starts quietly in our 40s or 50s, especially if we’ve been less active or had recent illness.

It can affect how we move, our balance, and even day-to-day tasks.

[⚠️Surge in 995 EMS Calls]

📈 995 Emergency Medical Services (EMS) calls to SCDF have surged to a high of nearly 750 calls a day on average in the first week of December.

This is about 100 cases more than the average daily EMS calls between July to September 2023 (Note: Average daily number of EMS calls pre-COVID was about 550).

And do you know that almost 5% of medical calls to the 995 hotline are non-emergencies?

🚨 If EMS calls continue to climb, the public may experience delays in ambulance response, particularly for less critical medical incidents as the SCDF needs to continue prioritising our limited resources for life-threatening medical emergencies

We are monitoring the situation closely. Measures have also been put in place to manage the increase in EMS Calls, some of which are:

• Redeploying ambulances to areas with higher rates of medical emergency calls

• Assessing 995 emergency calls and dispatching ambulances only for emergencies

• Not conveying to hospital patients who have been assessed by SCDF paramedics to have non-emergency medical conditions

Our 995 call takers, paramedics and frontliners are doing their best to provide swift conveyance to hospital for people with life-threatening and emergency medical conditions.

Here's what YOU 🫵 can do to help.

📵 Refrain from calling 995 if you are not suffering any life-threatening or emergency medical condition. Visit a nearby clinic to seek medical advice instead.

Doing so will allow the SCDF to continue providing swift response and conveyance to those who require our emergency medical services the most.

See picture for examples of critical, life-threatening medical emergencies.
