Colbie, the Miniature Italian Greyhound, was the epitome of quiet, dignified resilience.
As a sighthound, Colbie was built for speed and the sight of her whipping through a field, elegant, gazelle-like was something that made you hold your breath. As you took in the beauty of her form, you could not but marvel at her body mechanics, at how such a little thing was capable of such speed.
One fateful day, however, Colbie put a foot wrong, yelped in pain and hobbled painfully back. Poor Colbie had injured her leg and a couple of visits to the vet later, it was determined that surgery was needed. Unfortunately, the surgery was unsuccessful and Colbie was still in great pain and the prospect of amputation now loomed. Colbie had a final successful surgery to allow her to keep her leg and to allow her to live painfree.
Colbie needed to strengthen her leg post surgery and became a reluctant swimmer. She would look at her hooman Momma with her large pleading eyes hoping she would change her mind about swimming. Colbie would accept and go along with it though, because Colbie was, above all, always a sweet and obedient girl and she noticed the look in her Momma's eyes and understood how much it mattered to her Momma.
Day after day, Colbie worked at her strokes, and was soon streaking across the pool, a newly minted "swimhound"! Colby's leg also gained some strength and her Momma was so proud, she had been given a masterclass in resilience.
Colbie trotted across the rainbow bridge last year. Her family miss their little sunbeam dearly, and will carry a little of her quiet strength with them always. Run free dear Colbie, go with our love. 🙏🌈
