One day, you suddenly realise walks with your dog have become very leisurely. He has started to refuse to sit for treats. The dusting of "sugar" on his snout has become more pronounced. It tears at your heart when he has to make an extra effort to get up off the floor.

What do we do? How do we prepare for that day that has started to creep forward?

The truth is that nothing can prepare us for that day. All we can do is to prepare for what comes after. We make sure to store up memories, to lay by treasures that will give us some small comfort in the afterdays.

So take lots of photos. Close-ups of him looking up at you. Take a picture of his wiggly bum that he's shoved up to you for a scratchie.

Take a mental video of you rubbing paw balm into his toe beans.

Make a simple sketch of him napping.

Bury your head into his shoulder and drink in his funk.

Feed him treats a small piece at a time, whispering love and thanks with each bite.

Fill that last year with so much love and bonding that you will have plenty to hold on to in the afterdays.

Mei Mei, didn't really stand out. She was another floofy, little poodle with a dear, little smile.

She had, however, everything that mattered. She had her pawrents' hearts and the ability to make them smile indulgently at her little antics and idiosyncrasies. She filled their hearts to bursting when she took on the role of nanny and protector to her newborn human sibling.

Mei Mei crossed the rainbow bridge last year. She led a beautiful life with her family and her love will stay with them always. Run free, dear Mei Mei, go with our love. 🙏🌈

This time of year can sometimes be hard.

We expect to be interrupted as we unwrap the bakwa but we complete our task unmolested. Our hand reaches out to ruffle a little mophead but there's only thin air.

Be gentle with yourself as you notice absences this season, love doesn't disappear just because time passes. Have an extra cookie for the little one that lives in your heart.

Blessed Year of the Horse dear friends.

There was nothing oversized about Giant, the Pomeranian mix. 🤭 His ironic name was just that. He was neither large in stature nor in spirit.

He was a sweet, submissive, affectionate pupper who loved his treats. He loved his mom and hated baths. He would bark at passing strangers but would be very quiet and considerate within the home.

His was a comforting presence, an always available lovebug who would untiringly stay on his back, ready for belly rubs.

Giant gave his family 14 wonderful years. They will always remember his happy little face and the warmth of all the cuddles he gave in his lifetime. Run free, dear little Giant, go with our love. 🙏🌈

If there was a word that could sum up Toto, the corgi, it would be the word grit.

The doughty little boy battled his IVDD without ever giving in to despondency. He refused to be confined, he refused self-pity, he worked hard at hydrotherapy, and did his best to keep on walking.

His will was so strong that even when his legs were so atrophied and he could no longer walk, he would continue to run in his sleep.

He was such a positive force. When he finally was unable to walk, he accepted his little pram with great cheerfulness. He would sit up high, take in the sights with big eyes, and smile at all and sundry.

Toto crossed the rainbow bridge last year, having lived the best life he could. Run free dear Toto, go with our love. 🙏🌈

Yorkie, the terrier cross, was the Boss. There was only one clock that mattered in the household, Yorkie's clock! 🤭

You see, Madame had a schedule to keep. She knew when she had to get her hair done, when she wanted her meals, and when she wanted to go on a car ride. Woe betide any tardy minion, they would get a proper ear bashing from Madame. 🤣 Yorkie even dictated when everyone was to go to bed!

Yorkie ran a tight ship for 14 years and her family miss her bossing them about. They miss her love and devotion, her courage and all her silly little ways. Run free Yorkie, go with our love. 🙏🌈

Coco, the toy poodle, held herself in. She tiptoed around things. She did not allow herself the luxury of spontaneity, only anxious anticipation.

That is, until she met her Mama and Papa, who only needed one look at her to realise that love and patience were what was needed.

So, they held the space for her, a space filled with gentle encouragement, a judgment free zone, and found authentic joy every day in Coco being Coco. They knew Coco did not need fixing, nor did she need training. The magic happened, and one day, it was as if Coco had stepped out of her shell and started living.

Unexpected noises and new experiences no longer fazed her. Coco knew where the centre of her universe was. She was gentle, she was calm, and she had enough love and devotion for several lifetimes. The high point of her life was being present at her Mama's & Papa's wedding, and she made sure she leapt in to kiss the bride .... and groom. 🥰

Coco, crossed the rainbow bridge a year ago but she lives as a hidden smile in the corner of her Mama's mouth. A cherished memory of all that is good and wonderful in this world. Run free dearest Coco, go with all our love. 🙏🌈

Nirvana, the Japanese Spitz, was a gentle little boy who saw everyone as a potential friend.

His little face would light up and he would trot up and initiate play with dogs and even cats. He was a friendly little soul who took great delight in the wonderful world out there.

He loved the little dried fish snacks, durian and raw carrots. Cucumbers, however, were a big "no", and he would turn his face away from the disgusting green stuff.

Nirvana loved car rides and would drink in the sights rushing past his window till his little brain became so overwhelmed that he would begin to droop and was ready for home.

Nirvana crossed the rainbow bridge a year ago but his happy little face is forever carved on his family's hearts. Run free Nirvana, go with our love. 🙏🌈

Shiloh, the sheltie, was well travelled indeed. She was born and grew up in Shanghai, followed her family to Bangalore, Warsaw before spending her golden years in Singapore.

She took easily to long haul flights, staying calm in her crate. She adapted easily to the different climates but preferred colder climates.

She loved dressing up and would even happily tolerate funny, unwieldy accessories. Shiloh was a beautiful girl, her lovely sable coat and regal gait always caught the eye.

She was a sweet, obedient and loving girl. Her gentle devotion and companionship brought much joy to her family.

Shiloh crossed the rainbow bridge last year. Her family will remember her grace and beauty always and carry her love forever in their hearts. Run free dearest Shiloh, go with our love. 🙏🌈

Tabby, the Maltese, was a boy with very definite opinions about some things. He hated all dog figurines, dog plushies or toy animals that would move.

He was also such a drama queen, he would a hysterical fit everytime his family brought him outside, as if he thought he was being thrown out.

Tabby firmly believed his place was in the home and he was indeed perfect in that. He always looked cute, always ready to play, and such a good listener -- cocking his ears and tilting his head as his listened to his Momma sharing her day.

Tabby had a secret talent. He had the ability to stay perfectly still like a living statue until his Momma gave him the command to relax. Only then would he take a much needed breath followed by a deep sigh.

He was also such a snugglebunny, he loved everything about his Momma, her clothes, her bed and he never tired of her cuddles.

Tabby crossed the rainbow bridge a year ago but he will always live in his family's heart. Run free Tabby, go with our love. 🙏🌈
