Xiao Bao the Shih Tzu's story, is one of those sad tales that cause outrage. His owners abandoned him at the groomers. The poor boy waited and waited, but his owner never returned to collect him.

He eventually found his furever family through an animal rescue group. His family may have been reticent and few in words, but they never held back in the love and warmth they showed Xiao Bao. He was brought into their family circle and cared for and cherished as a treasured child.

Under their loving roof, Xiao Bao learned to trust again, to smile and bark in joy.

Xiao Bao crossed the rainbow bridge last year. We are sure he's watching over his dear family, his little heart filled with gratitude and love. Run free dear Xiao Bao, go with our love. 🙏🌈

Christmas, the Shih Tzu, was very cute, and she made the best of her looks.

She was a bit of a diva and knew how she could get her way. She was clingy and loved attention from her hooman "slaves".

She loved bananas with a vengeance and would huff in displeasure if she did not get her fill of her favourite fruit. No grocery bag ever crossed the threshold unmolested, little miss would shove her little head into the bags and unearth everything before laying claim to it all by lying on them! 🤭

Christmas loved her walks but disliked being leashed. She wanted to be free to jump on benches to better watch the world go by. She was such a princess and would invariably run out of steam and demand to be carried home.

Christmas crossed the rainbow bridge last year and her family miss their "little monster's" shenanigans. Run free dear Christmas, go with our love. 🙏🌈

Chi, the Papillon-Chihuahua cross, was in rough shape when she found her forever family. Her beautiful black and tan coat was shaggy and tangled. She had heart worm and was covered in injuries. Her trauma response was to lash out with her teeth.

There was nothing for it but to give Chi time and space. Chi knew deep down that it was different this time. However, fear and suspicion are hard habits to overcome.

She never stopped hating dogs but made an exception for her 2 doggy siblings. She tolerated them and even put up with the puppy's overtures towards play.

She remained suspicious of strange hoomans and never really picked up doggie pastimes like fetch. She fell deeply in love with her hoomans though, and would dance and hop about in the greatest delight around them.

It was a hard won trust and her family deeply appreciated that it had been given to them.

Chi crossed the rainbow bridge last year. Her family remember their little warrior, hearts aching for the life she led before finding them but also for the intense love and gratitude she held for them afterwards. Run free dearest Chi, go with our love. 🙏🌈

Romi, the Yorkie, was just a baby. The sweet little girl loved people. She would insert herself into any social gathering, sitting quietly and listening. She would contentedly lay down in her family member's laps and settle down for a little snooze.

She was their little princess, she loved being groomed. She would happily walk to the bathroom when it was shower time and would stay still for haircuts.

Romi had her limits though, she was sensitive about her nails and disliked having them trimmed. She was also wary about catching them on sliding door rail tracks and would make a big production of jumping over them. 🤭

Little Romi crossed the rainbow bridge last year and her family miss their lap warmer. Run free dear Romi, go with our love. 🙏🌈

Benga, the Sheltie, was the faithful companion you could always count on.

The sense of duty ran so strong in him that he needed little training. He instinctively knew what was needed and when he was needed.

He was watchful and mindful. His human guardians truly believed he was the best dog anyone could have.

He never made a fuss, loved humans, and played well with other dogs. He could be trusted to stay with his humans when out for a walk, never running off regardless of tempting smells or sounds around him.

He was gentle and patient with children, watching over them and helping to support the little ones as they learnt to walk. He could even be trusted to pull his little human sister along when she learned how to skate.

Benga crossed the rainbow bridge last year. His family is sure that he is sitting at the feet of his best friend, his human grandpa, enjoying the easy companionship of best friends. Run free, dear Benga, go with our love. 🙏🌈

A boy and his dog.

Lucky, the Maltese, was the pet that his guardian had pestered his parents for since he was little. They only gave in when he was already a teenager and his parents deemed him responsible enough to care for a pet.

The little puppy was named Lucky, and this spoke volumes about his guardians' mindset. This little puppy would come to represent the joy, love and close moments they would spend as a family.

Lucky loved being with his family. He was sad when they left him to go about their daily lives and was happy when they returned. It was that simple for Lucky, he knew what his entire world revolved around.

He was cute and playful and would initiate his little games, playing hide and seek or stealing a sock so they would chase him around the house.

Dear little Lucky completed his journey early last year but his guardian, all grown up now, will always remember his childhood companion. Run free, Lucky, go with our love. 🙏🌈

One day, you suddenly realise walks with your dog have become very leisurely. He has started to refuse to sit for treats. The dusting of "sugar" on his snout has become more pronounced. It tears at your heart when he has to make an extra effort to get up off the floor.

What do we do? How do we prepare for that day that has started to creep forward?

The truth is that nothing can prepare us for that day. All we can do is to prepare for what comes after. We make sure to store up memories, to lay by treasures that will give us some small comfort in the afterdays.

So take lots of photos. Close-ups of him looking up at you. Take a picture of his wiggly bum that he's shoved up to you for a scratchie.

Take a mental video of you rubbing paw balm into his toe beans.

Make a simple sketch of him napping.

Bury your head into his shoulder and drink in his funk.

Feed him treats a small piece at a time, whispering love and thanks with each bite.

Fill that last year with so much love and bonding that you will have plenty to hold on to in the afterdays.

Mei Mei, didn't really stand out. She was another floofy, little poodle with a dear, little smile.

She had, however, everything that mattered. She had her pawrents' hearts and the ability to make them smile indulgently at her little antics and idiosyncrasies. She filled their hearts to bursting when she took on the role of nanny and protector to her newborn human sibling.

Mei Mei crossed the rainbow bridge last year. She led a beautiful life with her family and her love will stay with them always. Run free, dear Mei Mei, go with our love. 🙏🌈

This time of year can sometimes be hard.

We expect to be interrupted as we unwrap the bakwa but we complete our task unmolested. Our hand reaches out to ruffle a little mophead but there's only thin air.

Be gentle with yourself as you notice absences this season, love doesn't disappear just because time passes. Have an extra cookie for the little one that lives in your heart.

Blessed Year of the Horse dear friends.

There was nothing oversized about Giant, the Pomeranian mix. 🤭 His ironic name was just that. He was neither large in stature nor in spirit.

He was a sweet, submissive, affectionate pupper who loved his treats. He loved his mom and hated baths. He would bark at passing strangers but would be very quiet and considerate within the home.

His was a comforting presence, an always available lovebug who would untiringly stay on his back, ready for belly rubs.

Giant gave his family 14 wonderful years. They will always remember his happy little face and the warmth of all the cuddles he gave in his lifetime. Run free, dear little Giant, go with our love. 🙏🌈
