This week in DBT Skills Training, Module 4: Interpersonal Effectiveness, we learn dialectical thinking.
What's that? It's about holding two seemingly opposite ideas in mind at the same time. In relationships, this means acknowledging your needs AND the needs of others.
Here's how it works in real life:
Disagreements with a friend: You can be upset about their plans (your need) while also understanding their perspective (their need). This fosters a calmer discussion to find a solution that works for both.
Setting boundaries with family: You can value your family time (your need) while needing some personal space (their need). Dialectical thinking helps you communicate boundaries respectfully.
By practicing dialectical thinking, you can:
- Build stronger connections
- Resolve conflicts more effectively
- Feel more validated and understood
