When someone is experiencing a mental health crisis, the response matters.
NAMI Lehigh Valley’s Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) program helps ensure that individuals in crisis are met with understanding, compassion, and trained support.
CIT-trained officers receive specialized education in recognizing the signs of mental health challenges, de-escalating situations safely, and connecting individuals to appropriate resources. If someone calls and requests a CIT-trained officer, and one is available, they will respond.
This training helps create safer outcomes for everyone involved - individuals in crisis, families, and first responders.
Our local CIT program now trains:
• Municipal police officers
• Sheriff’s department
• Corrections officers in both adult and juvenile facilities
By equipping first responders with the tools and knowledge to navigate mental health crises, we are strengthening safety, reducing stigma, and building a more informed community.
CIT is one of the many ways NAMI Lehigh Valley works behind the scenes to improve mental health response throughout our region.
