Halloween isn’t just about costumes and candy. It can affect mental health in both positive and negative ways. For some, the spooky sights and scary themes can trigger trauma or phobias like samhainophobia (fear of Halloween).

On the flip side, Halloween can offer social connection, creative expression, and a safe way to explore fears. For those who struggle, coping strategies like focusing on non-scary traditions or seeking social support can help manage stress. Interestingly, some people with anxiety are drawn to Halloween—it can even provide a controlled “simulation of fear” that feels empowering.

Many who live with anxiety are drawn to Halloween. Here are 7 reasons to help you solve the mystery of why people who run anxious still run towards all things spooky.

October is National Depression and Mental Health Screening Month

Depression can affect anyone at any time and no two experiences look the same. Factors like environment, genetics, life experiences, and brain chemistry can all play a role.

This month, we’re raising awareness of the importance of accessible and affordable mental health screenings. If you or someone you care about has been feeling persistently sad, withdrawn, or hopeless, take that next step: reach out for help and get screened.

Depression is highly treatable, and support is available. A professional can help determine the best options for your individual situation, whether that’s therapy, medication, peer support, or a combination of approaches. You don't have to face this alone!

How are you REALLY feeling? Sometimes we get so used to giving a quick, positive answer (even if it's not true). Other times we get so busy we forget to check in with ourselves. Take a moment this weekend to pause, breathe, and notice your emotions. Self-awareness is the first step to self-care. 💙

As the leaves change and days grow shorter, the shift from summer to fall brings more than cooler temperatures and pumpkin-spiced everything, it can also affect mental health. For some, autumn is a season of reflection and renewal, but for others, the reduced daylight and changing routines can lead to feelings of sadness, fatigue, or anxiety.

Seasonal changes impact our internal rhythms, hormone levels, and mood. Less sunlight can lower serotonin (the “feel-good” neurotransmitter) and increase melatonin, which may contribute to tiredness and low energy. Shorter days and colder weather can also reduce social interaction and outdoor activity, adding to feelings of isolation.

For some, these changes may trigger Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a type of depression that occurs in certain seasons, most often in fall and winter. Recognizing these signs and maintaining healthy habits like exercise, social connection, and balanced nutrition can help support mental well-being during this seasonal transition.

Understanding the connection between seasons and mental health is key to navigating the fall months with care. Be aware of your feelings and seek help or practice additional self-care if you find you need extra support.
