Who says work can’t be fun? 😃
The theme was music for Labor Day, and we had a fantastic time singing songs about work and discussing our experiences in the workforce.
I love getting to make music with these folks each month 🎶❤️

Thank you Haven Banks and The Pines at Bluffton for the beautiful testimonial. It is always a privilege to make music with you all ❤️🎶

“As an Activity Director in an Assisted Living & Memory Care Community, I am constantly looking for fun new ways to keep our residents happy, active and having fun! From the very first time our residents met and had their first session with Candace, they have been able to have just that and so much more! The residents are constantly asking me “when is Candace coming back?” She is able to include our Memory Care residents as well which brings such joy to their day. Music brings everyone together and is a universal language, Candace goes above and beyond to ensure everyone is involved and having a fun time. The music she choses often sparks memories and conversation between residents. When it is music therapy day, the residents are bright eyed and they talk about it all day! Candace brings an energy that forces you to have fun and get moving to the music. She treats the mind, body and soul with the energy she brings every single time! We are forever grateful for her service to our residents. She has greatly enriched their lives, not one day of which is taken for granted. Thank you Candace!”

Hey Everyone!
It's only August 1st, but as you might have noticed, every store is already gearing up for the Fall season. And I may or may not have stocked up on a few seasonally scented candles 😁

In celebration, I thought it would be a great time to announce that I will have a special Fall Promotion beginning on September 1st for new customers. And, I have discounts on lessons for Back-to-School for voice, guitar and ukulele as well!

I simply can't wait for Fall (and some cooler weather), so please message me if you are interested in more information.

We are closing out today. But, I wanted to give several shoutouts before we finish.
Chances are, if you have given me a card, gift or note of appreciation since I’ve started this career, I still have it. And just this week, I received a beautiful tumbler from a parent that reads: “Sometimes you forget you’re awesome, so this is your reminder”. So I’d like to show some appreciation in return.

1. Shoutout to all the Music Therapists out there!
I can not begin to name all of the wonderful MTs who have guided and supported me on this journey. And even if I don’t know you personally, I do know that you are amazing and are doing incredible things.

2. Shoutout to all those in other fields who advocate for Music Therapy!
If you are a healthcare professional, teacher, social worker, program director/coordinator, caregiver or anyone who has seen a need and referred MT services, I thank you. We couldn’t do what we do without you.

3. Shoutout to the people we serve!
You all are the REASON we are Music Therapists. I feel so blessed by the opportunity to bring music therapy to you, and to be part of your lives. I’m so grateful for every patient, client, student, resident and program participant I’ve had the honor of serving in my career thus far.

Happy World Music Therapy Week to everyone!

On the left is a picture from my first practicum placement at Shenandoah University in the Spring of 2009. I remember being so nervous for sessions back then. Feeling like I could barely play the guitar I was holding; that my voice wasn’t strong enough to lead people to sing; and that I didn’t have what it took to be successful in this career. But, I remember something that my professor, Suzanne Rohrbacher, told me after observing one of my sessions. She said that it’s more effective for clients to enjoy the experience if I enjoy the experience. That piece of wisdom totally reframed my approach and I take it into every session I’ve ever had since.
Now, how about the picture on the right? This is me now. A Licensed and Board- Certified Music Therapist who has been practicing for over 11 years. I am still not perfect. I forget lyrics and mess up chord progressions (I don’t know if you realized, but there is a lot of music out there). I worry that I didn’t say the right thing to someone in a time of need. And, I still walk away from sessions each time knowing I could have done something better. But, I certainly have also grown a lot since that first picture. I have gained knowledge, developed more skills, and learned to appreciate and focus on the “good”.

“Good” is an acronym I came up with to help me reflect on my music therapy sessions.
“G”oal: What goal am I working towards and how did I work towards that goal today?
“O”bjective: Did I meet or improve on an objective?
“O”utcome (or Overall): What was the overall outcome of the session? Did the energy or mood change from start to finish?
I tend to end sessions with questions like “Did you enjoy the group today?” “Did you learn something new?” Or “Who had fun?” 😊
“D”ifference: What made this session different than ones prior? Was there a change with a patient or participant? Did I try something new or different?

Although progress isn’t easy, it’s way more obtainable than perfection. I’m proud of how I’ve strengthened in my competence, creativity and confidence throughout my music therapy journey.
I love this field, hope it continues to grow and that I grow in it.
