I had an interesting conversation today with a friend and it made me realize that I think I should talk more about what we do and why…
Several years ago, on Mother’s Day (thank you, Liller’s) my daughter was accidentally stepped on by a horse. It was heartbreaking to watch her in so much pain. The doctor treating her injury gave her Ketamine, as do most ER doctors, because of its effectiveness in treating the patient’s pain safely.
My friend had mentioned to me that she wanted her dad to complete a Ketamine onboarding (a series of about 4-6 treatments) but that he was hesitant because of his religious beliefs….which, can be a common misconception for some, considering that for the longest time, Ketamine was mostly known as being nothing but the party drug, “Special K”. While he’s not the first to feel hesitant in using the treatment for that reason, it still surprises me. No one would think anything of someone, like my daughter, receiving Ketamine in a hospital setting to treat pain…yet, to use the same treatment for anxiety or depression has this negative connotation…as if being in pain mentally for decades is simply not enough to justify seeking relief from a treatment shown to help…I’m sorry, but if someone gave me the choice between momentary pain from an accident or decades long mental anguish…I’d choose getting stepped on by a horse…twice.
Depression is debilitating. It’s exhausting. It encompasses your entire life and affects the lives of your loved ones…if that’s not worthy of treatment and possibly relief, I’m not sure what is.
