The fourth and final post on this awesome series from Terrapeutic.
Meditation Techniques Part 4
13) Use a candle. Many people find that meditating with eyes closed can be challenging. By lighting a candle you can use the flame as your point of focus. Allowing you to strengthen that attention with a visual cue.
14) Do NOT Stress. This may be the most important tip that I share with you, and the hardest to execute. I was a beginner once as well and I remember stressing about doing it right, if I was doing it at all, how to sit, how to rest my hands the list went on and on the first few times. No matter what happens during your meditation practice, do not stress about it. This is not a cookie cutter practice. Do what feels right, calm your mind and expectations. There is no right or wrong here and remember it is a self learning process.
15) Do it together. Meditating with a partner, friend, spouse or loved one can provide wonderful results, benefits towards your practice, and a great deal of support in this new path of wellness you have began.
16) Meditate early in the morning. Without a doubt, early morning is seen by many as an ideal time to practice. Many professionals have found that the morning is quieter, your mind is not filled with the usual daily clutter, and there is less chance you will be disturbed. I have heard it suggested that you should try getting up half an hour earlier then normal to be able to add meditation to your routine.
17) Notice when your interest in meditation begins to waver. Meditation is hard work and as I stated before an active process. It takes dedication for your life to really benefit from meditation. You will find that for some reason or another that meditation seemingly does not fit into your life or schedule anymore. I have done it myself and know many people that have followed this sort of wavering trend. I can not stress enough that it is in this moment when you need your practice the most. My recommendation to you is go back to or find new book(s) or CD’s/Apps and become re-invigorated with the practice. Chances are that wavering feeling or losing interest in your ability to focus on meditation is parallel with your ability to focus in other areas of your life!
