When Dr. Kevin Roggin came to Hollings last year, he had a plan.

"One of the great challenges in our field is being able to provide timely access for cancer patients," Dr. Roggin says. "The reality is that our hospitals are busy, and clinics are full of patients. If another health care provider calls me, we often are able to expedite access for patients in a timely way. I wanted to be able to provide this high-level access to every patient in South Carolina."

And with that idea in mind, the Next-Day Access program was born.

Dr. Kevin Roggin's Next-Day Access program at MUSC Hollings Cancer Center offers rapid appointments for cancer patients, ensuring timely, expert care.

Sometimes you have to come to Charleston for cancer care, like when you need a surgeon who can perform a LEER procedure.

But we understand that traveling to Charleston can be logistically difficult and – well, miserable – when you're sick or dealing with side effects. That's why we're building up the Hollings Cancer Network, so that South Carolinians can get the best possible care close to home.

For Debra Morin, that meant she could get chemo much closer to her home in Horry County.

Facing a challenging journey with uterine cancer, Debra Morin made a list of five things to remember each day.

"Every woman, every person wants to leave the operating room feeling like their surgeon got it all. And so, anything we can do to help give them that confidence that we got all of the tumor out is a win," says Dr. Andrea Abbott, medical director of the Comprehensive Breast Program at Hollings.

She's talking about the MOLLI surgical system that marks a breast tumor location.

In what is being described as a big step forward in breast cancer treatment, the MOLLI System is simplifying the removal of potentially cancerous lesions while enhancing the overall patient

A "true pioneer." That's Dr. Robert Stuart, who was MUSC's first board-certified oncologist and who brought bone marrow transplants to South Carolina. Beloved by his patients, nurses and the many doctors he trained and mentored over the years, Dr. Stuart has made a lasting impact on MUSC, on Hollings and on South Carolina. So it was more than fitting that our new outpatient bone and marrow transplant clinic be named in his honor: The Robert K. Stuart, M.D. Blood and Marrow Transplant Center. Last Friday, staff, patients, donors and families gathered to cut the ribbon on this long awaited facility and celebrate Dr. Stuart.

Some projects just stick with you. That was the way for a Group 3 medulloblastoma research project for Dr. Jezabel Rodriguez Blanco. She started it years ago in Miami, then brought it to Charleston and kept working on it on the side.

Group 3 medulloblastoma, by the way, is the most aggressive of four subtypes of medulloblastoma, with the worst prognosis. So it wasn't just academic curiosity that kept her working on this side project, but a desire to help kids and their families affected by this awful cancer. Now, her research is pointing to a promising treatment.

Guidelines on taking aspirin to reduce colon cancer risk have changed over the years. Now, a new study is drilling down to show which groups are most likely to benefit.

“We try as hard as we can to get people in a healthier state, but in some people, it’s just very difficult to lose weight or quit smoking. This could be a simple option that could help, especially for those who are at highest risk,” says Hollings director Dr. Raymond DuBois. He wasn't involved in the study but, as a colon cancer researcher, was asked to provide expert commentary.

Taking a regular aspirin may keep the oncologist away, at least when it comes to colorectal cancer, according to a new study, and people with unhealthy lifestyles seemed to see the greatest benefit.

The Community Health Van is on the move! Our team was in Marion County to help families to get their kids vaccinated before the start of school.

The van offers required school vaccines as well as the recommended HPV vaccine. The HPV vaccine is for boys and girls and protects them from strains of the human papillomavirus that can cause six types of cancer later in life.

“It was rough and bumpy and scary,” says uterine cancer survivor Lakisha Mack. "But as I went through it, I went through it with them. I went through it with MUSC. I went through it with my mom, my family and, first and foremost, God.”

Diagnosed with a rare uterine cancer at only 46, Lakisha Mack turned to faith, her family and her doctors.

Hollings is the first in South Carolina to begin using the MOLLI surgical system.
Surgical oncologist Dr. Andrea Abbott explains how this system helps surgeons to more precisely locate a breast tumor and, in the process, spare more healthy tissue.

Officials at MUSC Hollings Cancer Center are introducing a less invasive method for removing breast cancer tumors.

"Everyone puts the dog p**p bag on the leash. Why don’t you put a sunscreen stick on there?" says Hollings' Dr. Andrea Abbott.

She talked to the Post and Courier about the importance of sunscreen during regular daily activities, not just when you head out to the beach.

Most people don't use sunscreen daily as they should and are missing out on cancer prevention. But another unexpected benefit is stopping wrinkles on the face.

We were honored to be included in the Congressional Glioblastoma Day Reception in D.C. Hollings director, Raymond N. Dubois, M.D., Ph.D. spoke on behalf of Hollings and NCI-designated cancer centers about the need for innovative treatments and support for glioblastoma research. Each year, about 12,000-15,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with this disease. We’re grateful to the SC Congressional Delegation for their support of Hollings and cancer research, and to Senator Graham for championing the Glioblastoma Awareness Day Resolution.

Thank you to Chris and Todd DeVore, who recently donated toiletry bags filled with goodies to MUSC’s Hollings Cancer Center in memory of their daughter, Brittani DeVore Hough, on her birthday. Brittani was diagnosed with cancer and while receiving her treatments at Hollings, she always carried her bag of toiletries. She passed away in May of 2023. Chris and Todd thought this would be a nice way to carry on Brittani’s memory – donating toiletry bags for cancer patients at Hollings during their infusion treatments. By giving back, they hope it will bring positivity and hope to those suffering from cancer.
