Rascal here.🐾🐱 I just wanted to thank Fillmore Veterinary Hospital for taking care of me. I haven't been eating for the past couple of days and then my foster mom noticed that my chin was swollen.

Dr. Karen and Dr. Alex at Fillmore were able to see me today. They extracted an abscessed tooth. I'm feeling so much better and will be back to my lovable, attention seeking self soon.💕
Random question, does your office do/take canine blood donations?
Today is Blaze’s Birthday. He is 11 years old. Thank you Dr Cor and Dr Karen for being the best vets in town 🎂🐾

Dear clients, friends, and family,
As many of you have already heard by now, Dr. Alex is officially leaving us for California the first week of October. He has been an excellent colleague for the past 11 years, a wonderful doctor who loves to get on the floor with your pets, and we will all miss him greatly. And for me, he has been a friend as well as a peer. He is leaving us for personal reasons, and on good terms, so he has my blessing as he goes into the next phase of his life.

To that end, I have had a Dr-Help-Wanted ad out for over a month. We've had over 500 hits, and zero responses. Apparently other practice-owner colleagues in town and across the country are experiencing similar doctor shortage situations. Quite frankly, I'm a little flabbergasted by this current state of affairs, and when I really think about it, I get a little depressed. I believe the corporatization of my profession is changing it for the worse, but we can have that conversation in private...
And so, moving forward, the 3 of us remaining doctors have tweaked our schedules to work more, but that won't fully replace losing a full-time doctor. The schedule and availability will tighten up. We will do our best to accommodate all of you the best we can over the coming months until we (hopefully) find another doctor. I ask for your patience and understanding. Thank you.
We will keep you informed of our status from time to time. And if you have a family or friend veterinarian looking to live in Colorado Springs, and wanting to work in a pleasant and healthy work environment, PLEASE refer them to me. That would be much appreciated! We will get through this!
Thanks again -
Dr. Cor

Sweet, little Honey came in for some dental work today. She had 2 fractured teeth that were painful and needed to be extracted. Check out these before and after pictures!

The first photo is of Honey dressed up, mostly for our enjoyment.
The second photo is of her teeth before her cleaning.
The third photo is of her teeth after we scaled the tartar off. Can you see that impressive fracture?
The fourth photo is after that tooth was extracted and her teeth were polished.
The last/fifth photo is of her recovering, we added a cute bee bandage sticker to match her cute collar and bandana

Who doesn't enjoy seeing kittens?!

Did you know that it's important for puppies and kittens to go to the vet for a series of vaccinations to help protect them from infectious and life-threatening diseases?

Keep your pets up-to-date on their vaccinations to help keep them safe!

Fireworks can be scary for pets. If your pet is especially anxious around loud noises, a sedative may be right for them. Don't wait to call, NOW is the time to get prepared. (A current exam at our hospital is necessary)

Other tips include:
Keeping doors and windows shut (including blinds)
Play calming music
Make sure your pets are wearing their collars with IDs as fearful pets may try to escape
Provide a safe place for them
Busy toys may be a good distraction

Happy Easter from all of us at Fillmore!

03/18/2022

Hello, all! We have received a few phone calls lately inquiring if we are moving to a new location. We would like you all to know that we are not moving and have no plans on moving any time in the future. We heard there might be a posting on a neighborhood app saying differently, but straight from the horse's mouth (and Dr. Cor's!) we're not going anywhere. :)

Hello everybody, we have a lost dog on the loose in the 80907 area and would appreciate everybody keeping an eye out for him.

This is Toby. He is a grey and black Pomeranian. He got out last night (1/14). He is 14 years old and has a dislocated knee. He is very friendly and will go to anyone for affection. He doesn’t have any teeth and doesn’t hear very well.

Toby is an intact male, blue merle Pomeranian, and lives around the Mount View/Meadow area in 80907. He does have a limp due to his dislocated knee.

If you have any info please call Janet at 719-352-5307 or 719-598-9732. His momma misses him very much!

We will be closed for the upcoming holiday weekend so that we can spend time with friends and family, and dress up our pets instead of yours. We will be closing at 12:00 pm on Friday, December 24th and will be back in the office on Monday, December 27th at 8:00 am. In case of emergency, Animal ER Care and Powers Pet ER will be open.

We hope you all have a happy and very healthy holiday!

12/17/2021

Please continue to have patience with us. We are still working to get our phones up and running. We have a temporary solution but our voicemail does keeps filling up fast. In case of an emergency, please try Animal ER Care on North Nevada.

12/15/2021

We have lost power in addition to the phones. We will be closing the office today. We will call everybody who had an appointment today when we regain power. Thank you all for your understanding, please be careful out there!

12/15/2021

Due to the high winds we are having, our phones and internet are currently down. We have set up a temporary voicemail that we will be able to check, but we may not be able to respond.

Please be careful if you come in for a visit today. There was an unfortunate incident with flying debris and the back windshield of someone's van. We cleaned it up as well as we could, but the continuing winds have prevented a full cleanup. There is still some residual glass around the south east side of the building, please be careful when you come in.

Thank you!

12/13/2021

It's a great time to stock up on what you'll need over the holidays!

Who needs a new furry friend in their life??? This is Todd. Todd is FIV+ but that doesn't stop him from being the friendliest, most purrtastic kitty around. He is currently being fostered by a wonderful person who took him in, got him tested and vaccinated, and is keeping him in his own room out of the cold. Todd was previously a stray, but he loves attention so much he decided that wasn't the life for him. He should be an only cat, and he's reportedly not fond of dogs either. If anybody would like to give Todd a new permanent home, please message us and we will pass your information on to the foster mom.

Dear Clients, Friends, and Neighbors,

Many of you have by now heard about the squirrels diagnosed with Bubonic Plague recently in Colorado Springs' Old North End. This is the part of town north of Colorado College to Fillmore, and from Patty Jewett Golf Course to I-25.

I was involved in this case, and after relaying my suspicions to the Public Health Department, they have moved forward. I'm happy to report that thus far the dog, the family, and I and my staff who were in contact with the exposed dog, are all doing well. This neighborhood had another positive squirrel case in October 2020, and from clients who live in that area, we've been told there was a significant squirrel die-off last fall and over the winter.

Historically, the Pleasant Valley neighborhood has had squirrel plague, so now that it's on the east side of I-25 is troubling. PLEASE be vigilant and careful. Watch for erratic behavior in squirrels, and unexplained deaths. Contact the El Paso County Health Department. Protect your pets - dogs and outdoor cats should have flea protection. Even though we have a lot of wildlife interaction in our urban environment, feeding them is not a good idea. And certainly, hand contact is a real bad idea.

Recall too that we've had a significant amount of rabies in skunks the past few summers. They also have died off and I'm not seeing nearly as many as I used to, but beware with them too. Skunks are nocturnal, and a skunk out during the day is bad news - probably rabid. Again, call the Health Department. The same can be said for bats - if encountered during the day, probably rabid. Keep your distance - and call someone.

In closing, while all this sounds scary, it's not as dangerous as you might think if you practice avoidance and exercise common sense.

Have a good post-COVID summer! Be safe!

-Dr. Cor
