In Durango, our team at CommonSpirit Mercy Hospital recently co-hosted a Southwest Colorado Cancer Survivors Day Celebration, where more than 100 community members gathered to enjoy food, music, activities and connection with one another. The power of community was strong and reminded us how privileged we are to serve our friends and neighbors in Durango and the entire Four Corners region.

Congratulations to Mike Cafasso, who today was announced as the CEO for both St. Mary-Corwin and St. Thomas More hospitals. Mike has been CEO of St. Mary-Corwin since February 2018 and has served as interim CEO for St. Thomas More since July 2023. In total, he has served our ministry in Southern Colorado since 2011.

Mike is a compassionate, employee-first leader who understands the unique challenges that face our communities in Southern Colorado and has continued to find opportunities to expand services, recruit top-tier providers and meet the needs of the communities through our prescription food program and community garden. We are grateful his leadership will continue to have a positive impact throughout Southern Colorado!

Today we celebrate St. Anthony of Padua, the namesake for CommonSpirit St. Anthony Hospital, CommonSpirit St. Anthony North Hospital, and CommonSpirit St. Anthony Summit Hospital. As the patron saint of lost and stolen articles, St. Anthony of Padua is one of the Catholic Church’s most popular saints. But there’s a deeper reason why three of our hospitals were named in his honor.

In his day, he was well known for his expert knowledge and understanding of scripture, his devotion to the poor and the sick, and his powerful preaching. St. Anthony of Padua lived a life of simplicity and heartfelt devotion to God. Just as important were his peacemaking skills and calls for justice. To this day, he is a remarkable inspiration for how to live life passionately not for oneself but for others, especially those who are sick, poor and forgotten.

Employees from CommonSpirit St. Mary-Corwin Hospital recently joined other community partners at the 10th annual AMR Safety Jam in Pueblo. More than 2,000 participants gathered at the Jam from all over Southern Colorado. Held at Lake Minnequa Veterans Memorial Park, Safety Jam is a free festival with a goal of providing the public, especially children and teens, with information and resources to help them lead safe and healthy lives.

Our team gave out 320 bike helmets, and they provided education on how to perform hands-only CPR and how to stop life-threatening bleeding. They also spoke with parents and guardians about our Emergency Department's pursuit of "Pediatric Advanced Readiness Recognition" through the Colorado Pediatric Preparedness for the Emergency Room (COPPER) program. Thank you to all of our amazing St. Mary-Corwin employees for their hard work and dedication to the communities we serve!

As a result of her own breast cancer journey, Cindy Nengas wanted to give inspiration and hope to other cancer warriors. So she donated homemade envelopes that contain an essential oil called "HOPE," and she made soft minky scarves and donated them to our cancer center at CommonSpirit Holy Cross Hospital - Jordan Valley in Utah. Cindy's beautiful donation and her desire to pay it forward and help others is the very best kind of humankindness.

Kyle brings more than 15 years of experience in operational and strategic leadership at major health systems and hospitals. “It’s invisible, so it’s not high up on people’s radar,” says Dr. Eric Bernicker, Medical Director of Oncology for our CommonSpirit Health Mountain Region. Dr. Bernicker is referring to air pollution and how most of us don’t consider the risk before heading outside.

On a recent segment of CO & Co. on 9 News, Dr. Bernicker talked about how harmful air pollution can be to our lungs after prolonged exposure. But there are steps we can all take to keep our lungs healthy, even for those with existing respiratory issues.

Healing is at the heart of what we do. One way we keep our patients and our communities healthy is by demonstrating environmental stewardship and social responsibility in our purchasing practices. We recognize the environmental and societal impact of our goods and services. Focusing on the effect of our purchasing decisions can contribute to minimizing environmental harm from factors like energy usage, greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption and waste production, and increasing our reliance upon more sustainable solutions. Today we dedicated and blessed our new Flight For Life Colorado base at CommonSpirit St. Elizabeth Hospital in Fort Morgan, bringing life-saving air and ground medical transport services to communities throughout northeastern Colorado.

“Two years ago, we stood here in a similar fashion to introduce CommonSpirit as a ministry to northeastern Colorado and vowed to take care of each and every person in the counties that we serve,” said Josh Neff, CEO for St. Elizabeth Hospital. “We promised to bring improved access and level of care to this part of the state, and today we’re fulfilling that promise as we welcome Flight For Life to this community.”

Flight For Life Colorado is the nation’s oldest civilian air medical transport service. With bases at CommonSpirit hospitals in Denver, Frisco, Pueblo, Colorado Springs, Durango and Fort Morgan, Flight For Life transports patients to the most appropriate hospital, operating within the Colorado trauma system rules for trauma patients. In addition to general patient transport, Flight For Life will offer residents of Morgan and surrounding counties unique capabilities like whole-blood transfusions for hemorrhaging; cardiac life-sustaining technologies; high-risk obstetrical care; and pediatric critical care.

Shantel McBride had an idea. As a chaplain with our Greater Salt Lake Market, the importance of humankindness weighs heavily on her. She provides spiritual and emotional care for patients and their families at our Holy Cross hospitals and wanted to do something for the broader community to recognize the small ways we can use the healing power of kindness.

The Hello Humankindness Parade began with a parade along a one-mile route from Holy Cross Hospital – Salt Lake to the Cathedral of the Madeleine, which is the mother church for the Diocese of Salt Lake City. Hospital leaders and caregivers, as well as neighbors and other community members, joined the parade and were greeted by the Very Reverend Martin Diaz at the Cathedral, where a series of speakers reinforced messages of lifting each other up in difficult times and spreading compassion.

“The evening was incredibly inspirational, and our speakers, artists and musicians all had a very personal connection with Humankindness, sharing their own stories and calls to action,” said Christine McSweeney, CEO of two of our Holy Cross hospitals. “There was a strong focus on mental health awareness and su***de prevention, and [the event] created many opportunities for us to bring simple ways to engage our employees in acts of kindness in our daily lives.”

At CommonSpirit, we believe that humankindness is an everlasting gift – one that we hope to inspire others to pass on. Chaplain Shantel McBride’s idea has already made a lasting impact well beyond hospital walls.
