Nkele
Recent events have left us all feeling deep emotions. Anger, fear, sadness, and confusion dominate our thoughts and conversations. We are reminded that evil is alive and active in our world. But it is when the night is darkest that the light is needed most.
There is a problem in our world. It can be said that there are many problems, but ultimately they all boil down to one and there is no law, leader, government, or politician that can solve it. The problem is the heart of man.
There’s a theme that runs the course of the Old Testament. Try as we might, humans will always fail to love God and others well. The problem? Our hearts. The Bible tells us that our hearts are wicked, evil, and deceitful, leading us to our own destruction. In our hearts there is anger and murder. Our hearts become bitter and poisoned all too easily. Greed, gluttony, and lust take control. The sins of self are deeply rooted from birth. But where the theme is of the hopeless heart, God steps in to provide a way out.
“I will give you a new heart and put a new Spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” Ez 36:26
I recently heard a song that was recorded in a church in Mozambique. The Christian community has been under heavy persecution there for years. Christians being murdered and burned alive for their beliefs. Then recently this little church was hit by a hurricane, which destroyed their already humble building. Using tree branches, tarps, and scraps of wood, the members of the church built a makeshift roof to protect them from the African sun while they gathered. And then, in what would seem like a hopeless situation, they cried out to Jesus, “Nkele.”
There is only one solution in our world. There is only one Way. Because of the fall of man in the Garden, we are born incomplete. Our hearts and our souls are missing a vital element. Without it we cannot be truly human. We cannot love others or see the world as it is. We cannot see that all humans are flawed and imperfect, requiring forgiveness. We cannot see the powers of darkness lurking behind every harsh word and malicious act. We cannot hate the evil but love the person. We cannot become the light of the world, giving us authority and power to overcome the dark. And so we cry out, “Lord Jesus, Nkele! Come inside, stay, abide in us.”
We need Jesus. We need His Spirit abiding within. We need His humbling work done in our hearts of stone. Try as we may, without Him we will always fail. Darkness will tell its lies and do its conniving work, leading us to hate and division. But with Him, mercy and grace abound. Wisdom pours out. The Light has come into the world and the darkness cannot overcome Him because it cannot comprehend Him. We break the patterns of the world with love and we step into His Kingdom. Jesus is the solution. His dwelling in our hearts is the only way to true life.
Lord Jesus, nkele.
In Health and Faith,
Dr. Marc
