a desire to help develop Canadian health care, and to advocate for the professions’ model of cooperative, collaborative, patient centered quality health care. This is exactly what team-based care looks like in action. Grateful for your support and excited to keep building this together for patients across BC.

Collaboration is key for better patient care! We believe that physician assistants (PAs), under the supervision of family doctors, can greatly improve healthcare by enabling many benefits to patients including faster access.

We’ve written a letter of support to the Canadian Association of Physician Assistants calling for the integration of PAs into BC’s primary care system.

PAs are helping redefine what primary care looks like in Canada.

At ACCESS Fort Garry in Winnipeg, an interdisciplinary primary care team, including 5 PAs, 13 family physicians, 12 NPs, and other health professionals serve more than 10,000 patients. PAs are core members of the primary care team, delivering integrated, collaborative care that improves access for patients.

The Medical Post is highlighting this model this month, and CAPA is proud to represent the professionals strengthening healthcare teams and expanding access to care across the country.

This is a proven example of how team-based primary care can expand access, strengthen continuity, and better support both patients and providers. The opportunity now is to scale what is already working.

CAPA was proud to exhibit at this week at the International Centre in Toronto (May 6-8), and the energy was unlike anything we've seen before. Healthcare professionals stopping at our booth to say they agree that every doctor deserves a PA. Colleagues sharing how much they love working with their PAs. And more conversations about how to get a PA than ever before, which tells us something important: awareness is growing, and it's changing practice.

Thank you to our Director of Advocacy and Communications Kristy Corrente, Events Coordinator Belana Millham, and Ontario Director Kevin Kitzul for representing CAPA on the ground and making this happen. And to everyone who visited our booth (and used our WiFi): we loved meeting you.
Big things are happening for the PA profession in Canada.

On April 22, CAPA brought the Physician Assistant profession to the Alberta Legislative Assembly and the conversations we had that day matter.

We were honoured to meet directly with The Honourable Adriana LaGrange, Minister of Primary and Preventative Services, and The Honorable Jason Nixon, ECA, MLA, Minister of Assisted Living and Social Services, as well as representatives from the offices of The Honourable Rick Wilson, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, and The Honourable Myles McDougall, BA(Econ), MBA, ECA, Minister of Advanced Education.

We were also proud to welcome to our event: The Honourable Mickey Amery, Minister of Justice. The Honourable Nate Glubish, Minister of Technology and Innovation. The Honourable Todd Loewen for Alberta, Minister of Forestry. The Honourable Dale Nally, Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction. The Honourable Demetrios Nicolaides, Minister of Education and Childcare. The Honourable Searle Turton, Minister of Children and Family Services. Justin Wright, Parliamentary Secretary for Rural Health. Nolan Dyck, MLA.

Together we made the case for Physician Assistants as a practical, evidence-informed solution to Alberta's most pressing health system challenges from access to care, to workforce shortages, to system capacity.

Our discussions centred on three priorities:
Expanding PA training capacity in Alberta
Building sustainable funding models
Strengthening recruitment and retention

The level of engagement from Alberta's government speaks to the growing momentum behind the PA profession. The work continues. 💪

A special thank you to the PAs on site for representing the profession and sharing their expertise and experiences, including Hannah Wiens, Alana Takahashi, and Kirsten Luomala.
