I talk to 3 to 5 folks every day about Chewy. He has a prominent SERVICE DOG tag for all to see.
Most folks think this kind of dog needs to be registered or trained by a professional organization. No, on both accounts.
Infact, the registration is just a scam taking advantage of people who have not read this message.
Service Dogs are medical devices!
They are prescribed by a Doctor of some type.
Many times a psychiatric diagnosis is the reason.
For example:
I have met many Vets with post traumatic disorder. When they get triggered and think they are back in Viet Nam. The dog sees and smell adrenalin.
A bark, clothes tug, or the dog will position herself between other people and the owner.
These actions interrupts the Vets mind set and he can pet the dog and self talk himself down.
I have seen this many times in my homeless out reach.
Further, in many cases the medical literature
recommends the owner should train the animal herself. This was my case. I had a severe brain injury with depression.
Bonding through training (seizure alert, more about that later) brought me out of my head into Chewy's happier world.
I will be posting more on the medical research concerning service dogs.

Chewy was the best relationship I ever had. Nothing but unconditional love.
m y third book about our homeless adventures is near completion. Chewy's chapter will need a portrait. I have not picked up pen for two years but I think his essence is captured.

Chewy was a social service animal who tended to the homeless. For a moment they forgot their heavy burdens when talking with Chew Chew.

Chewy attends an outside service for people experiencing homelessness with Arron. Noon Sundays, 805 Elm downtown Dallas. Arron operates Noble Life Outreach, a three-person 501 C. We distribute meals daily. This works has humbled me, and I appreciate all I have after seeing those with out a roof. Would you feel the same?
