There is a term we use in OB called “let the baby ride down.”

If your epidural is dense and cannot feel where to push, it is often wise to let the uterine contractions bring the baby down. This eliminates pushing for two hours without a baby being born.

It may also avoid “The Talk” where a doctor starts mentioning things like “I just think the baby is too big or we should start considering a Cesarean Section”.

If you have an epidural, when you are told your cervix is completely dilated, ask these two questions:

1)“Is my baby in any distress?”
2)“Do you think it would be easier for me to let my uterus bring the baby down?

April is Cesarean Awareness Month.

Third Trimester, Routine Office Visit...

“I think this is going to be a big baby you should just have a C/S”

Did you know? ACOG has very specific guidelines for when it is appropriate to offer a patient an elective C/S for MACROSOMIA (fancy word for large baby).

Prophylactic (elective) cesarean delivery may be considered (not encouraged) for suspected fetal macrosomia ONLY with estimated fetal weights greater than 11 pounds in women without diabetes and greater than 9.9 pounds in women with diabetes.

Is your child being promoted to big sister/brother?

Depending on the age and personality of your older child, this can be a sweet transition, or at least one with good photo opps.

If you have an older child it is a good idea to plan ahead for them as well. Making a list of activities can be helpful for later reference - when you are tired and caring for a newborn, you'll be grateful you planned this in advance!

Who may be an additional playmate or chauffeur for older siblings? What activities might help entertain your older child(ren)?

April is Cesarean Awareness Month.

“Your baby is breech so you need to have a C-section.”

If your baby is not head down after 36 weeks, it is unlikely it will turn on its own. But that does not mean you need a Cesarean.

Your physician should offer to perform an External Cephalic Version (ECV). This is a simple procedure where your physician meets you in Labor & Delivery places an IV, administers medication to relax your uterus then gently rotates the baby using some ultrasound gel placed on your belly.

In the appropriate patients, a good OB/GYN should have a 50-80% success rate.

But not all OB/GYN’s are comfortable performing the procedure and will tell you that you need a C/S.

This is just not true.

ECV, is a widely accepted practice supported by the American College of Obstetrics & Gynecology

Some moments a pregnancy are delightful.

One of the things that most people love is feeling their baby move.

The little flutters then the kicks....then those big moments, where you're not quite sure what baby has going on in there

Obviously, not all of pregnancy is delightful, but what parts do you feel grateful for?

Give us a big flex!

When you do, notice that the tricep must relax and extend in order for the bicep to contract.
This is the same way the cervix and the uterus function together- the muscles at the top of the uterus (ie. the fundas) contract, allowing the cervix to open.

The birth of a child for the non pregnant parent or father does not involve changes of their body, but they will experience situations and emotions they have not previously.

Often two big fears are being out of control of the situation during labor and fears concerning the safety of their partner and baby.

We foster conversations with you so you receive the best care and we can provide confidence and support for your birth choices and support you through birth.

Its World Doula Week, so its time to give the doulas a shout out!

Doulas are a valuable part of a birth team and we appreciate them because having a doula present means our parients are likely to have a positive birth experience.

Here are some of the reasons why we appreciate doulas:

👉 they provide emotional support and help bring calm and confidence during birth

👉 they provide physical assistance, including positioning the mother, massaging her muscles, and providing other comfort measures.

👉 they help families understand the stages of labor, the different types of pain relief, and other important topics.

If you are pregnant and considering hiring a doula, we encourage you to do your research and find a doula who is a good fit for you. A doula can make a big difference in your childbirth experience.

Prodromal labor is real labor that starts and stops.

It typically starts up at night and progresses...and then goes away when the sun comes up. This can be mentally and physically exhausting, so be sure to care for yourself during this time.

The good news is that in time, this will move into a continuing labor that will bring your baby to you.

Remember, prodromal labor is real, often promotes cervical change and readies your baby for their arrival.
