This month I spoke with Dr. Nicole Sommer, Professor of Plastic Surgery at the Southern Illinois University in Springfield, Illinois, director of the SIU cosmetic clinic and the residency program director. We talked about techniques of breast reduction including her experience with the Apron or no-vertical incision breast reduction, how to teach residents to build surgical intuition and evaluate surgical outcomes, her thoughts on squaring the work-life circle, and much more!

Very excited to announce the launch of my Plastic Surgery podcast, "Leveling Up", with PRS Global Open (https://open.spotify.com/show/2ASpl13UBoTbimLS5s7I5g...).
The first episode (Dr. Greg Buncke - Leveling up Replantation, https://open.spotify.com/episode/63PrUm6Rag3kkG8GZWcQ6B...) dropped today, and I'll be publishing new episodes each month.
I sit down with accomplished surgeons and learn more about the little things that make a good surgeon great. These are the secrets that surgeons teach only to their trainees - until now.

Listen to PRS Global Open Deep Cuts on Spotify. Talks at meetings or articles in journals and textbooks don't always tell the whole story of the field of plastic surgery. With the Deep Cuts podcasts, PRS Global Open delves into the details that are often hidden from view. In the "Giants of Plastic S...

A story about one of my patients - it's been an honor to help restore what he lost in the high voltage accident 15 years ago!

For Willie Gloria, it’s the little things in life that bring him immeasurable joy: like twisting the cap off a water bottle without help. Or being able to put his arm around his girlfriend, pain-free. Or – and this one is huge – pulling on his catcher’s mitt and feeling the jolt of his son’s fastball, clocked in the mid-80s, when it hits the sweet spot.

That jolt is a powerful reminder of just how far he has come in the last 15 years with the help of his friends, family, and two generations of UT Southwestern physicians. https://bit.ly/2KQCnIk

Ganglion cysts used to be called Bible cysts. If you had one of these cysts, the at-home treatment was to smash it with a book - and the largest (and often, the only) book in most households was a Bible. Some old-timey remedies (like drinking out of the other side of the cup to stop the hiccups) have an element of wisdom to them. Others (like treating a fever with leeches) haven't held up very well. So what about ganglion cysts? Should you smash them with a book? And what are they anyway?

Ganglion cysts were called Bible cysts because the at-home treatment was to smash them with a large book. Learn about the modern treatments for these cysts.

Skin grafts are a common plastic surgery procedure. Recently doctors in Italy expanded the frontiers of skin grafting with gene therapy techniques.
Two years ago, Dr. Michele De Luca and his team were asked to treat a desperately ill young boy who had lost almost all the skin on his body due to a genetic disease. They were able to replace the defective gene in some of his skin cells, and then grow these few cells into sheets of skin that were surgically grafted back onto the boy's body. Today, the patient is back home.

Aging and sun exposure results in skin damage and characteristic changes in skin structure. Understanding these changes can allow you to more critically evaluate the promises that skincare products make. Here's a quick overview of the four types of skin damage that we commonly see.

One of the rarest types of studies - with their patients' consent, these researchers used a sham procedure. They went through all the motions of placing a stent without actually putting one in. The goal was to relieve chest pain. What they found was unbelievable.

With a sham treatment, British researchers found that a common and often costly cardiac procedure does not relieve discomfort.

One of the most common questions patients have is how long recovery will take after surgery. This is actually a difficult question to answer! It's a bit like asking how long it will take you to recover after a workout. Obviously, it matters how long your workout was. It also matters if you're in good shape. Plus, it depends on the weather that day, whether you had a sore knee from moving furniture last week, if you stubbed your toe in the first few minutes, ... you get the point.

So what are the factors that affect your recovery after mastectomy? What might your recovery be like?
