“This was the best thing I’ve ever done for myself. It gave me so much more than strength.”
For Margaret Haase, going to physical therapy was life-changing. Margaret was born with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease, a rare degenerative disorder that damages nerves in the arms and/or legs. It didn’t progress until she turned 40 when she started having difficulty with balance and walking long distances, as well as muscle spasms and chronic pain. Margaret, a mother of two young children and a kindergarten teacher, loves exploring and playing outdoors, but the progression of her CMT was making life difficult.
Margaret decided to receive treatment at our Lakewood, Ohio center with physical therapist Alex Albright. In the beginning, walking was painful and exhausting. As she progressed, she was able to do lunges and gained strength in her legs. Margaret began to believe in herself again.
“Alex had superior knowledge of what CMT was and how it affected my movements,” said Margaret. “He was encouraging without being pushy or demeaning and he understood what would benefit me most. He also educated me on how CMT changes and impacts walking and balance.
For Margaret, the most important thing was regaining confidence. “I feel confidence in how I’m able to move, walk, stretch and build strength. I am not doomed for decline and I know what I can do to stay strong."
Recently, Margaret put her six months of hard word to the test and took her family on a trip to Disney World. After four days spent in the parks, Margaret walked approximately 26 miles. “I felt so strong,” said Margaret. "I knew how to stretch, rest and recover so I could keep going. I’m motivated to keep moving without fear of injury.”
The power of physical therapy shined its light on Margaret. It has given her more time with her children and enhanced awareness and she now has less shame about CMT.
“I’m proud of what I can do. Alex and his team were genuinely supportive, proud and encouraging along the path.”
