As summer activities pick up, so does the temperature. That's why it's essential to be aware of the signs and symptoms of a heat cramp.

These muscle spasms typically occur after excessive exercise in hot environments. They can be longer and more painful than regular cramps.

Prevention starts by remaining hydrated while exercising. Avoid alcohol, caffeine and limit vigorous activity outdoors on extremely hot days.

If experiencing pain that may be heat cramps, take these steps:

- Rest and cool down
- Drink clear juice or a sports drink with electrolytes
- Perform gentle stretching or massage to relieve pain

Call a doctor if cramps last longer than an hour.

Do not resume strenuous activities for several hours after the cramps have dissipated.

Knowing your limits will help keep summer fun and pain-free.

Summer create the perfect conditions for insects and the diseases they can carry. To help you and your loved stay safe, check out these tips.

Wear repellant outside to help avoid stings and bites.

Long pants and long-sleeved shirts can work as a great barrier from ticks and mosquito bites.

Avoid standing water in your yard, as mosquitos like to lay eggs there.

Check your skin and hair for ticks after you've been in the woods. Ticks can carry diseases like Lyme and Anaplasmosis, both of which can have deadly consequences if left untreated.

If you do encounter any insect and appear to have an allergic reaction, seek treatment. Symptoms can include hives, nausea, fever or trouble breathing.

Have a safe and insect-free summer!

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. Roughly 9,500 people are diagnosed every day according to the American Academy of Dermatology.

One in five Americans will develop skin cancer before age 70, and most skin cancers are caused by exposure to the sun.

Ultraviolet lights cause damage to the DNA in skin cells. This can occur from tanning devices as well, which have been known to produce UV radiation in amounts higher than the sun.

Get out there and enjoy the weather, but be sure to always wear sunscreen!

With the summer sun blazing, some families like to head to the beach while others go to their local pool. Whatever your preference, keep these water safety tips in mind.

If you’re boating, always remember to wear a life vest and be cautious of swimming around the propeller.

If you’re at your local beach or even at a destination ocean, be wary of strong currents and know your limits when it comes to swimming.

You should only swim if another person is present, and children should always be supervised when they are in or near the water.
Have a safe summer and remember to wear your sunscreen!

Memorial Day weekend is prime grilling time. But before turning out those sizzling hot dogs and hamburgers, take these steps to prevent a grill fire.

- Remember the three-foot rule: Always grill at least three feet away from houses and other structures.
- Keep a three-foot circumference around the grill to prevent children and pets from coming too close.
- Know how and where to dispose of cooking materials.
- Place coals in a metal can with a lid only when completely cooled.
- Never leave a lit grill or fire pit unattended.

We’re hard-wired to connect with others. Smartphones and tablets make it a snap.

For those with hearing and speech loss, these smart devices are a smart way to truly connect. They can boost sound or cancel out background noise. They give visual alerts for doorbells and phone calls. They can caption speech in real-time to see what’s being said or speak what’s been typed for user-friendly conversation.

It’s Better Hearing and Speech Month. Better hearing and speech… made possible by technology that not long ago might have seemed magical.

May is National Stroke Awareness month and a big part of awareness is prevention. While you cannot control all factors that contribute to a stroke, you can control certain lifestyle choices.

Diet and exercise are two important factors. Having high cholesterol puts you at a higher risk of stroke. So, it's important to maintain a balanced diet. Exercise is also important. Try and aim for at least 30 minutes day.

Smoking and drinking alcohol can negatively affect your body and enhance your chances of a stroke. Moderation is the key when it comes to alcohol. As for smoking, try to quit altogether. Smokers are twice as likely to have strokes than non-smokers.

Lastly, having a sleep schedule to that helps you to get eight hours is also important. A healthy sleep schedule can prevent sleep disorders which can contribute to your chances of having a stroke.

“This was the best thing I’ve ever done for myself. It gave me so much more than strength.”

For Margaret Haase, going to physical therapy was life-changing. Margaret was born with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease, a rare degenerative disorder that damages nerves in the arms and/or legs. It didn’t progress until she turned 40 when she started having difficulty with balance and walking long distances, as well as muscle spasms and chronic pain. Margaret, a mother of two young children and a kindergarten teacher, loves exploring and playing outdoors, but the progression of her CMT was making life difficult.

Margaret decided to receive treatment at our Lakewood, Ohio center with physical therapist Alex Albright. In the beginning, walking was painful and exhausting. As she progressed, she was able to do lunges and gained strength in her legs. Margaret began to believe in herself again.

“Alex had superior knowledge of what CMT was and how it affected my movements,” said Margaret. “He was encouraging without being pushy or demeaning and he understood what would benefit me most. He also educated me on how CMT changes and impacts walking and balance.

For Margaret, the most important thing was regaining confidence. “I feel confidence in how I’m able to move, walk, stretch and build strength. I am not doomed for decline and I know what I can do to stay strong."

Recently, Margaret put her six months of hard word to the test and took her family on a trip to Disney World. After four days spent in the parks, Margaret walked approximately 26 miles. “I felt so strong,” said Margaret. "I knew how to stretch, rest and recover so I could keep going. I’m motivated to keep moving without fear of injury.”

The power of physical therapy shined its light on Margaret. It has given her more time with her children and enhanced awareness and she now has less shame about CMT.

“I’m proud of what I can do. Alex and his team were genuinely supportive, proud and encouraging along the path.”

Haley Ward is a true warrior. During a wrestling recruiting showcase, she tore the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in her elbow when her opponent attempted to throw her. But, Haley won the match anyway. In fact, she won the state finals and became the nation's number one recruit in her weight class. It wasn't until the season was over that Haley underwent surgery for her severe UCL tear.

When Haley first came to occupational therapy, she was discouraged. She had been told that recovery would take a year, which would keep her away from wrestling. However, Cheryl Zwerenz, OTR/L, CHT, COMT-UE, both encouraged and challenged her, providing the guidance Haley needed to recover faster than anyone anticipated - mere months.

The day that Haley won her third state championship was actually earlier than she had been told she would be able to return to wrestling in any capacity. Thanks to the power of occupational therapy, as well as Cheryl's skill and encouragement, Haley reports her elbow is 100% back to what it was prior to the injury.

Please join us in congratulating Haley for her speedy recovery and other amazing accomplishments!

According to the CDC, about eight people are killed every day in crashes that involved a distracted driver. Cellphones aren’t the only distraction out there. There are three different types of distracted driving.

Manual distractions cause you to remove your hands from the wheel. Eating, texting and adjusting the radio are all great examples.

Visual distractions, like looking at billboards or for things in your purse, are ones that make you take your eyes off the road.

A cognitive distraction is anything that causes the mind to wander away from the task of driving, such as thinking about what you're going to have for dinner or focusing on a work task.

Do yourself and everyone around you a favor: Keep your eyes and mind on the road!

04/11/2022

Time to put down your phone and pay attention; April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, cell phones are a dangerous distraction. In 2019, distracted driving caused more than 3,000 deaths. While this doesn’t mean that cellphones are solely responsible, they do play a large role in distracting drivers.

Texting or reading a text message takes your eyes off the road for five seconds. If you're driving at 55 mph, that's long enough to cover a football field.

Don't use your phone while driving. Pull over to send messages, use 'Driving Mode' on your phone to silence messages or make sure your phone is out of reach to avoid temptation.
Stay safe and keep your eyes on the road!

03/31/2022

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Patrol in 2019, a total of 843 bicyclists were killed in crashes involving motor vehicles. So, whether you’re driving to work or cycling, there are safety practices you can follow to prevent injuries.

For bicyclists: Always wear a helmet! Make sure to wear reflective clothing, no matter the time of day, so drivers can see you. You should always watch for pedestrians and make sure you announce yourself before passing them.

For drivers: Always be aware of bicyclists on the road! Give cyclists plenty of room when passing. To avoid crashes, you should always check blind spots before turning.

"DEFY ALL ODDS"
For college student Dylan Finn, an impromptu skateboard ride led to what appeared to be an unremarkable fall – until he and his family learned he had fractured his skull in four places. There was a 90% chance he wouldn’t survive; doctors told his mom that it was likely he would never speak or walk again. After getting out of the hospital, Dylan started rehabilitation at Kessler Rehabilitation Center in Saddle Brook, New Jersey. For Dylan, the words “never speak or walk again” rang in his ears, and now he says, “I was doing both in two months. Defy all odds.”

Kessler Rehabilitation Center is part of the Select Medical Outpatient Division family of brands.

In 2020, fire stations responded to 379,500 residential fires nationwide, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Remember to test your smoke detectors once a month, change their batteries once a year and install new devices every 10 years.

Rachel Green, P.T., from Baylor Scott & White Institute for Rehabilitation – Round Rock, shares that there is a way to establish an exercise routine without a gym membership or class.

Rachel is a physical therapist and certified lymphedema therapist who specializes in cancer rehabilitation at Baylor Scott & White Institute for Rehabilitation (BSWIR). Rachel reveals her secrets for maintaining a healthy lifestyle without having to step into the busy environment of a gym in her recent article from Breast Cancer Resource Center.
