The Conscious Gut

The Conscious Gut Science-backed, soul-centered support for gut health, mental clarity & root-cause healing. Because healing isn’t just a protocol.

The Conscious Gut is a space where biology meets compassion—where gut health, mental clarity, and emotional resilience are understood as deeply connected. Founded by functional nutritionist Sara Ganeian, our work centers on helping individuals move beyond symptom-chasing and into root-cause healing. With a blend of research-driven insight and lived experience, Sara guides clients through challenges like anxiety, burnout, brain fog, ADHD, and chronic gut imbalances—always with care, never with overwhelm. Here, we don’t just talk about food—we talk about what it means to feel safe, nourished, and supported in your body. It’s a process of remembering what your body already knows.

As a woman, working out on an empty stomach isn’t doing your body the favors you think it is. We’re a little more sensitive to stress, and going in fasted can spike cortisol, break down muscle, and leave you feeling drained instead of strong. You don’t need a full breakfast, just something small to signal safety to your body. A little protein, a little carb, and suddenly your workout actually works for you, not against you🤍

You’ve tried everything… low-fat, low-carb, low FODMAP, specific carb, all of it. You clean things up, you see some improvement… but you’re still not 100% there. That’s usually the point where it’s not just about the food anymore. If your body is stuck in stress mode, your gut can’t fully do its job, no matter how “perfect” your diet is. Sometimes the missing piece isn’t another restriction… it’s your nervous system🤍

As someone who’s been in the gut health field for the past 20 years and has worked with hundreds of clients, this is one thing I can say about constipation… sometimes the simplest things work the best. Two kiwis a day, with the skin on, can genuinely make a difference. Kiwi contains a unique combination of fiber and natural enzymes that help support motility and soften stool without being harsh on the gut. I’ve seen people try everything under the sun, and then something as simple as this gets things moving again. It’s not fancy, it’s not trendy, but it works more often than you’d think🤍

As someone who’s been working with clients in gut health for the past 20 years, one of the things I’ve really noticed is how often the gut gives us clues long before anything else shows up. Take Parkinson’s disease for example. We tend to think of it as a brain condition, but research shows that up to 70–80% of people experience chronic constipation or slow motility, often years before a diagnosis is ever made. That’s not random. Your gut and brain are constantly talking, so when something is off in the gut, especially something like persistent constipation, I don’t just brush it off. I start asking, what is the body trying to signal here?🤍

As someone who’s been working in nutrition and gut health for years, I can tell you this… we’re all so busy trying to optimize every little thing that we’re completely missing what actually moves the needle. I was watching a video the other day debating which sauna is better, and I just thought, most people aren’t even moving their body regularly. Don’t major in the minors. Eat real, whole, nourishing food. Move your body consistently. Get outside. Be around people who make you feel calm and supported. Sleep. Those are the things that actually change your health. Not the fancy biohacks, not the trendy wellness tools. The basics have always worked… and they still do🤍

I’ve been a gut health practitioner for the past 20 years, with a focus on SIBO, Hashimoto’s, and digestive issues, and if you want to work together, you can book through my website, theconsciousgut.com. But if you don’t have SIBO or other digestive conditions, this is what I recommend when it comes to supporting your gut. First, fiber… and not the bare minimum, I’m talking at least 30–35 grams a day to actually feed your microbiome and support proper motility. Second, color and diversity… the more variety on your plate, the more diverse your gut bacteria, and that’s where resilience really comes from. And third, fermented foods… things like yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi… small daily exposures that help reintroduce beneficial bacteria. Simple, but incredibly effective when done consistently. But if you have SIBO or histamine issues, these rules don’t apply to you. You first need to heal your gut🤍

04/11/2026

You know that feeling when you’re around someone and your whole body just… softens? Your shoulders drop, your breathing slows, your mind gets quieter without you even trying. That’s your nervous system feeling safe. And that safety is everything for your gut. Because digestion doesn’t happen in a stressed, rushed, “on edge” state, it happens when your body feels calm, supported, and connected. The people you surround yourself with quite literally shape how well you digest your food, absorb nutrients, and even how your gut functions day to day. So if you leave a conversation feeling grounded instead of drained, that’s not just a vibe, that’s biology. Choose the kind of connection that settles your system, because that’s where real healing and true wellness begin🤍

We’ve gotten so used to living in ultra-clean, climate-controlled boxes that we forget our bodies were never designed for that. Getting outside, touching the ground, walking through grass, even just being around trees exposes you to a completely different world of bacteria, the kind your gut actually thrives on. It’s not about being dirty, it’s about diversity. The soil, the air, the plants all help “train” your microbiome in a way no supplement can replicate. So something as simple as a daily walk outside isn’t just good for your mood, it’s quietly supporting your gut health in the background🤍

You can be doing everything “right” for your gut… eating clean, avoiding trigger foods, taking all the supplements… and still feel bloated, constipated, or just not like yourself. That’s where chronic stress comes in, and it’s a big piece that gets overlooked. When your body is constantly in fight-or-flight, digestion takes a back seat. Stomach acid drops, motility slows, your gut bacteria shift, and over time even your gut lining can become more sensitive. So on paper, everything can look perfect, but your body doesn’t feel it. Gut healing isn’t just about food, it’s about your nervous system too. If your body never gets a chance to feel safe, your gut won’t fully heal🤍

If you’re dealing with anxiety, poor sleep, or waking up in the middle of the night feeling wired, it may not be “just stress.” When estrogen is a bit higher than progesterone, it can drive up histamine levels in the body. And histamine doesn’t just affect allergies, it also stimulates your brain and nervous system. The result? A racing mind, restless sleep, and that exhausted but wired feeling. It’s all connected more than most people realize🤍

04/09/2026

Progesterone might be great for calming the nervous system, but it also slows gut motility, and that’s where the SIBO connection comes in. When things move more slowly through the small intestine, bacteria have more time to sit, ferment, and overgrow. So in certain phases of the cycle, during perimenopause, or with HRT that includes progesterone, some people notice more bloating, constipation, and that “stuck” feeling. It doesn’t mean progesterone is bad, it just means the gut needs more support alongside it.

SIBO is not rare, it just wears different disguises. It can look like constipation, diarrhea, or bloating that makes you feel like you wake up flat and go to bed looking six months pregnant, and it doesn’t always scream “gut issue,” but it usually is. After treating SIBO for over 20 years, the pattern is hard to miss. The hallmarks tend to be bloating that builds as the day goes on, symptoms triggered by “healthy” foods like fiber or vegetables, unpredictable bowel habits whether that’s constipation or urgency, excess gas, brain fog, reflux, and that frustrating cycle where you feel better for a bit and then everything comes right back. This isn’t random, and it’s not in your head🤍
