Have you noticed your child prefers to walk on their toes vs. the sole of their feet? If so, your child may benefit from physical therapy.

Addressing this concern early is critical for decreasing the chance of developing a habitual gait pattern as your child grows and develops. Children who walk up on toes are at risk for muscular tightness with limited mobility found at their ankle, and also increases the stress placed at the knees and hips.

Does your baby always preferred to look one direction, their head is often tilted to the side, or a flattening is developing on the back or side of their head. If so, then your child may have Congenital Muscular Torticollis (CMT). Untreated Torticollis can lead to a condition known as plagiocephaly, characterized by the flattening of the back or side of a baby’s head, and may also be associated with asymmetrical facial features.

Little Steps Pediatric Physical Therapy can help! https://www.littlestepspediatricpt.com/conditions/torticollis

Torticollis is where a baby’s head tilts to one side and rotates to the opposite side. This causes muscles on one side of the baby’s body to be tight and the other side to be weak. Left untreated this will impact the way your baby learns to roll, sit, crawl, and play. Untreated Torticollis is al...

Toddler Tips Tuesday

How can you help your baby master belly to back rolling? By helping them improve their ability to initiate and control side to side weight shifting when on their belly. A good way to encourage, and work on this skill is by placing cause and effect toys (think pop up, light up or sounds toys) or objects that can be easily knocked over (a foam roller standing up, a stack of blocks, or a roly poly toy) to encourage repetitive reaching. Every time your little one goes to knock over the stack of blocks they must first figure out how to shift their body to the side, which is a crucial component for rolling belly to back. Below are some links to great cause and effect toys!

October 4th is National Child Health Day!
Little Steps would like to take this day as an opportunity to remind you how important physical activity is for your child’s overall health and well being! With the weather getting cooler, take some time today to be outside with your child. You could go for a walk, play at the park, or even do some yard work together! Whatever the activity may be, just remember that it is recommended that children get at least 60 minutes of moderate activity a day to keep their bones and muscles strong! If you have a child who suffers from a condition such as asthma, Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), or some other disorder, and you are wondering what kind of physical activities are safe and beneficial for your child, please reach out to Little Steps for more information on how to safely incorporate more physical activity into your child’s day.

Toddler AND Tummy Time Tips Tuesday!

Looking for a fun idea to give your toddler some heavy work, while also entertaining your baby in tummy time? Try this fun idea! Place your baby (usually 5-6 months or older depending on their strength) on their belly on a blanket. Have your toddler pull them around the house either scooting or walking backwards. This activity provides great core and cervical strengthening, balance reactions, as well as vestibular input for baby at the same time providing core work for your older child!

Little Steps is celebrating National Play-Doh Day today! Play-Doh is a great tool to use for helping your little one strengthen their muscles through play. You can have your child practice fine motor/hand eye coordination skills to cut, roll balls, hide beads in the dough for your child to pull out, or create shapes with cookie cutters. Sensory Seeking children can squish and pound the play-doh for tactile and proprioceptive feedback. Gross motor skills can also be targeted by placing a ball of play-doh on each step to give your child a visual target when navigating stairs, or have them lift one foot up to stomp on a ball to focus on single leg balance.

TODDLER TIPS TUESDAY!!!
Crawling is such an important milestone in a baby's overall development. It helps develop their strength, stability, bilateral coordination, and helps start to strengthen their shoulder and intrinsic hand muscles needed for fine motor skills later on down the road. It also helps to promote their overall sensory and vestibular development. If your baby is more interested in standing activities instead of hands and knees play, or is more than 9 months of age and is getting around predominantly by either rolling or bottom scooting consider getting them evaluated for physical therapy services

Looking for additional childhood milestones? Check out my webpage at https://www.littlestepspediatricpt.com/conditions/developmental-delay

I'm happy to discuss your child's development and come up with a tailored plan to address your needs - give me a call! (540) 751-8207!

Developmental delay is described as a child not meeting expected milestones such as rolling, crawling, walking, and jumping by an appropriate age. September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

Cancer treatments can leave children with numerous side effects including fatigue and muscle pain. Physical Therapy can be used as a tool to help combat these symptoms as well as build up your child’s overall strength and endurance. Little Steps main goal is to get your child back to playing as soon as possible.

TODDLER TIPS TUESDAY!
Being able to sit still at a desk at school in order to write involves a lot more than just being able to correctly hold a pencil. Your child needs adequate core stability, bilateral coordination, visual attention, as well as hand eye coordination. By moving your play activity to a vertical surface you will be targeting all of these areas to help improve your child’s ability to perform fine motor activities at school.

Little Steps would like to wish everyone a happy and healthy first day back to school!

As everyone is getting back into the routine of early wake-ups and long days back in the classroom its important to remember the benefits of physical activity for these children. A recent study found that even just 30 minutes of exercise a day leads to an improvement in your child's cognitive function. This is key for our children who struggle with ADHD!

Toddler Tips Tuesday

If your little one is 2 or older and you notice them walking up on their toes more often than with feet flat, you should get them evaluated. Early treatment is key in preventing musculoskeletal deformities and pain as well as breaking this gait abnormality.
