In 2026, the recommended age for routine pneumonia (pneumococcal) vaccination for adults is 50 years and older. The CDC lowered this age from 65 to 50 in late 2024.
Pneumococcal vaccines are generally recommended for the following age groups:
Adults
Ages 50 and Older: All adults in this age group should receive the vaccine.
IF IT HAS BEEN GREATER THAN 5 years since your last pneumonia vaccine, talk to your physician about a booster vaccine!
Ages 19 to 49 with Risk Factors: Vaccination is recommended for adults under 50 who have certain medical conditions, including:
Chronic lung, heart, liver, or kidney disease.
Diabetes.
Weakened immune systems (e.g., from HIV, cancer, or organ transplants).
Cigarette smoking or alcoholism.
