Have you ever parked your car and picked a fresh banana 🍌 on the way inside? At VIM, that’s now possible!

We just opened our “edible” parking lot with a festive ribbon-cutting ✂️, joined by over 40 community members. Speakers like Dr. John Newman, Diane Wilson, Mayor Alan Perry, and Ray Deal from the Chamber highlighted VIM’s mission: we treat illness, but also champion prevention and wellness.

Our parking lots and green spaces now feature thriving banana, citrus, and nut trees, fragrant herbs for meals, and a hydroponic “Farm-acy” producing 30,000 leafy greens each year—fresh and local. Through Food as Medicine, personalized nutrition, activity programs, and healthy habit counseling, we’re building a healthier community.

Huge thanks to the Town of Hilton Head Island 👏 for the land lease, plus our supporters; together we added 58 new parking spaces and more ways to nourish neighbors.

Because of you, Volunteers in Medicine Hilton Head Island (VIM HHI) has expanded the use of FreeStyle Libre CGM patches to insulin-dependent Bluffton patients—those who previously had no access to this life-changing technology. 🌟

With these patches, patients painlessly monitor their blood sugar in real-time using a small arm sensor and their smartphone or Libre Reader 📱, gaining better control and peace of mind. This initiative isn’t just about numbers—it’s about helping people live healthier lives. By offering low-income, uninsured individuals vital insight into their glucose trends, CGM patches empower informed decisions, supporting fewer complications and better quality of life. 💪

Everyone at VIM HHI Clinic extends heartfelt thanks to the Wexford Foundation and the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry for their incredible support in helping us acquire state-of-the-art eye-care technology.

With this advanced equipment, our capacity to diagnose and treat vision-threatening conditions, especially diabetic retinopathy, has greatly improved. This technology promises a meaningful and enduring impact—helping prevent avoidable vision loss and enhancing the quality of life for our patients.

Last month, VIM honored the lives and extraordinary legacy of two cherished members of our clinic family—Dr. Charles Patrick “Pat” Burns and his wife, Janet “Jan” Burns.

Dr. Burns passed away on June 30, just weeks after the loss of his beloved wife of nearly 57 years. Together, Pat and Jan exemplified a life of service, compassion, and unwavering dedication to the well-being of others.

After a distinguished 35-year academic medical career at the University of Iowa, Dr. Burns brought his talents to VIM, where he spent 14 years volunteering as a physician. He provided expert care to our patients without charge, served on our medical executive committee, and was a member of our board of directors. He even founded The VIM Journal, which continues to highlight the important work of our volunteers and clinic community to this day. His contributions earned him the distinction of Fellow of VIM and the enduring respect of all who worked alongside him.

Pat’s wife Jan was an enthusiastic supporter of Pat’s service and a beloved member of our VIM lay volunteer team.

The Burns' legacy at VIM reminds us that service to others can truly be a lifelong commitment—one that leaves a lasting impact not only on the lives of those served but also on the hearts of those who serve.
