The SmartWomen Luncheon & Expo raised yet another record amount – $282,031 – through proceeds and donations for St. Joseph's/Candler’s Mary Telfair Mammography Fund. The fund offers life-saving mammograms and other breast health services for uninsured and underinsured women in the Savannah region.

Over the past 23 years, the SmartWomen event has raised $2,577,818.

Pictured are members of the 2025 SmartWomen Committee (left to right) Terri Doyle, Vernice Rackett, Allyson Harvin, Salita Hill, Gini Nichols, Andrea Dove (committee chair), Lora Reese and Kathy Lovitt.

“This unprecedented accomplishment could only be achieved through the sponsors, community members and the steadfast network of women who lead this effort every year,” said St. Joseph’s/Candler President & CEO Paul P. Hinchey.

SmartWomen Committee Chair Andrea Dove expressed her gratitude for all involved in the SmartWomen event’s success, including the many sponsors.

“I am so thrilled at this year’s record-setting success. It is especially gratifying because the volunteers and committee really rallied their passion and teamwork behind the event, the Fund the Mission campaign and SmartWomen raffle, which helped contribute to this year’s total.”

Savannah Urogynecologist Dr. Elizabeth Dotson grew up in a medical family, her father an OB/GYN in a small community in Virginia and her mother an ER nurse.

The primary conditions she treats are pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence, overactive bladder syndrome, f***l incontinence, fistulas of the ge***al tract and recurrent UTIs. She offers traditional laparoscopic surgery or robotic surgery with the da Vinci system, as well as vaginal surgery.

"Prolapse and incontinence were once conditions that women assumed they just had to live with. Many women wouldn’t even mention these problems to their physician," she says. "With increased demand, I suspect that our surgical techniques and tools will continue to advance. It’s exciting to see women are seeking out care for these conditions."

Does a sudden, sharp pain near your ribs stop you in your tracks?

If it hurts when you cough, sneeze, or take a deep breath, you might have an oblique muscle strain or tear.

This is especially common if your sport involves forceful twisting (think golfers, baseball players, or tennis stars). It's a debilitating injury, but the good news is, we can help you fix it.

Dr. Steven Greer, Medical Director of SJ/C Sports Medicine, says proper diagnosis is the fastest path to feeling better.

Attention current and former heavy smokers: Did you know that annual lung cancer screening can reduce your risk of death from lung cancer by up to 20%?

At St. Joseph’s/Candler, we use a low-dose CT scan—a quick and easy computerized X-ray—to look for tiny tumors before symptoms even appear, when lung cancer is often most treatable.

"We’ve already seen great improvements, so now the goal is to get more people screened," says Dr. Marc Bailey, cardiothoracic surgeon with St. Joseph’s/Candler Physician Network and the Advanced Thoracic Oncology Center at the Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion.

“We’re trying to get the word out, and if people qualify for it, I encourage you to at least go talk to your provider about it.”

✅ Do you qualify for this potentially life-saving screening?

You may be eligible if you are:
⚫ You must be 50 to 80 years old
⚫ At least a 30 pack-year smoking history (one pack a day for 30 years or half a pack a day for 60 years, for example)
⚫ Currently a smoker or have quit within the past 15 years
⚫ Have a family history of lung cancer

Action Step: Talk to your doctor annually about getting an order for lung cancer screening at one of our four convenient locations.

Medicare and most government insurance programs cover the screening; however, if you have private insurance, check with your provider to learn more about the cost.

As the weather cools down, guess who's looking for a warm, cozy place to hide and hunt? Spiders! 🕷

That means you're more likely to cross paths with them inside your home and garage. While most spiders are harmless, you need to be aware of the two major threats in the U.S.: The black widow and the brown recluse.

"Take the proper steps to avoid exposure to bites by wearing proper clothing and using repellent," says Caitlin Young, a family nurse practitioner with St. Joseph’s/Candler Primary Care located in Pooler.

As spiders seek warmth, make sure you:

❎ Seal Entry Points: Check windows, doors, and foundations for cracks.
🏡 Declutter Basements & Garages: These are prime hiding spots!
⛏ Wear Gloves: When digging through storage or working in the yard/garage.

Stay safe this season! Share these important tips with friends and family.

🎃👻 Happy Halloween from our Littlest Ghouls & Goblins! 👻🎃

Here at St. Joseph's/Candler, we're not just delivering babies; we're delivering future trick-or-treaters! Our NICU has been extra spooky (and sweet!) today, as our newest arrivals get into the Halloween spirit with costumes that are safe for infants.

St. Joseph's/Candler nurses McKenna Matthews and Hailey Stricklin recently spent two days hot-gluing pieces of felt and accessories together to create Halloween costumes for seven babies currently receiving care at the Telfair Special Care Nursery, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Mary Telfair Women's Hospital at St. Joseph's/Candler. The Special Care Nursery can manage care for babies born at 30 weeks or above.

Inspired by some of the babies' personalities, the nurses prepared the costumes to create fond memories for the babies' families during their newborn's time in the Special Care Nursery.

The initiative is the first time SJ/C has had babies don costumes like a Ghost Pirates jersey or ladybug wings. The nurses plan to have the costumes become an annual occurrence and may even include other holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas!

Did you know that thanks largely to clinical trials, there's been a 40% reduction in breast cancer mortality over the last four decades? That’s the power of research!

At the Nancy N. and J.C. Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion (LCRP), we are proud to be at the forefront of this life-saving innovation. Our commitment to research means we offer numerous clinical trials for all cancer types right here in your community.

"Clinical trials are the lifeblood of research and innovation for all diseases, especially breast cancer," says Dr. Gary Thomas, Medical Director at St. Joseph’s/Candler SC Cancer Specialists.

LCRP is one of just 13 facilities in the country invited to participate in the prestigious American Society of Clinical Oncology’s (ASCO) CDK4/6 Inhibitor Dosing Knowledge Study (CDK). This groundbreaking study is investigating how lower dosing strategies for HR+/HER2- metastatic breast cancer patients (65 and older) might reduce side effects while maintaining effectiveness—a "proof of concept" aiming to improve patient tolerance and quality of life.

For patients like Sun City resident Jo Frayler, participating in a clinical trial offers hope and access to the latest treatments. Facing her third battle with breast cancer, Jo was a candidate for the CDK study and is receiving IBRANCE, one of the approved CDK inhibitors being tested.

"I think I’ve been doing very well on it," Jo says. "I’ve had two PET scans since March. Both of them show significant decrease in the size of the lesions and nothing new anywhere."

Jo's positive experience highlights a crucial point: these trials offer more than just treatment; they provide an opportunity to contribute to a cure for future generations.

We are dedicated to moving cancer care forward. By participating in clinical trials at the LCRP, you get access to the latest advancements while helping to further global cancer research—all close to home.

💙 Navigating Life with a Movement Disorder? You’re Not Alone! 💙

Living with a movement disorder can feel overwhelming and isolating, not just for the patient, but for the incredible caregivers too. These neurologic conditions—including essential tremor, Parkinson's disease, dystonia, Huntington's disease, and Tourette's syndrome—are often difficult to diagnose, treat, and truly understand.

That's why finding a knowledgeable community is so important!

Join St. Joseph's/Candler for a free luncheon specifically designed to help patients and caregivers navigate this journey with support and clarity. This is a unique opportunity, as the St. Joseph's/Candler Movement Disorders Program is the only one of its kind in the region.

This is your chance to:

- Connect with professionals who deeply understand the unique needs of those living with movement disorders.
- Get your important questions answered about treatment, care, and daily living.
- Meet others in the community who truly get what you’re going through.

Kathryn Harne, Outreach Coordinator for the Movement Disorders Program, recently sat down with WSAV's Kim Gusby on Community Corner to share more about the program and this event.
