Aloha everyone. We don't post often since we're all basically socially media-lame! But since there's been a lot of questions about whether we'll stay open, the short answer is yes! Definitely. We've been following strict measures to keep things safely moving, and since we're under the umbrella of "essential healthcare" then we'll be here! Our usual hours will hold unless anything comes up. So in the meantime keep up the safety, if not for your immediate concerns, then for the larger community we serve of people in need.
Aloha!
Joe and the KA crew
Aloha everyone in the KA community. It's been an interesting first month back in action. We've been spacing patients out and keeping the safety measures going. Only a couple of hiccups with people who are NOT coming to KA! But I wanted to let everyone know that even with the uptick in new cases we remain confident in staying open. We've got lots of experience in past epidemics (I teach Chinese medicine epidemiology) and we'll add whatever safety measures we need to keep people healthy and safe. So for the time being we're here and will help as you need. Let us know if any concerns or questions we can answer about the ongoing issues around Covid-19. Be well, stay safe.

We got through the first week!! Of course not without the glitch of our email marketing service giving grief. So no email announcement went out yet, so if you get a chance spread the word that we're back and using plenty of modified scheduling to keep the safety factors going. We hope to see you soon and hope you're all well!🖖
We are re-opening tomorrow!
On behalf of the whole crew I'll say it'll be good to see you. We'll be there seven days a week again, but we won't have all our usual hours covered just yet. So give a call to see what's available.
We're following these basic guidelines:
1. Wear a mask
2. Wait outside on bench or in car until we can see you
3. We'll ask people to wash or sanitize hands upon entry
4. As a suggestion we're asking that people consider bringing their own sheet or covering for the chair or table.
We thank you for your patience through our absence and we hope that everyone is getting through well. See you soon!
Aloha
Joe Bright, LAc
KA Founder
Aloha all! We've not posted in quite a while. Part of that being that we've always been busy in the clinic rather than on social media!
But of course lately that hasn't been the case as we follow lockdown like you all are. We wanted to say that we hold space in our hearts for you all out there sharing the uncertainty of these times. We have each been spending our time in sending out all the best vibes that we can while offering guidance from a distance to those in need of it. It's not much but it's part of how we've always focused on transforming ourselves in order to be of service to you. When we can get past our own fears and be in a healthy mindset we can do a better job of helping you.
We are currently still closed but looking at what plans we will put into action for re-opening at the correct time. Some could argue that we could have opened already and be considered "essential." However, we had strong concerns about our proximity to Waikiki and we often get travelers from all over the world. So we had decided it was prudent to quarantine the clinic alongside ourselves.
So until we can safely open and continue the 11 years of being part of your healthy lives we will wish you the utmost of safety and the deepest wishes to remain well. And if you've already been impacted in some way we wish you the quickest of recoveries.
With much love to you all.
Joe and the KA crew
In the past decade or so, a significant amount of evidence has accumulated from high-quality studies showing that acupuncture provides genuine pain relief, and can help with migraine and other conditions.
Yup its baby time!! Not often we know what happens after treatment whether it's getting pregnant or helping induce labor, but someone actually stopped by today to say thanks for being a part of her getting pregnant. We wish her all the best and hope her and her baby grow healthy together. So far so good for the first 6 weeks!!!
Today was my (Alicia🙋🏻) official last day here at Kama'aina Acupuncture...feeling so grateful for this wonderful ohana of healers, patients, and community that make this place special.
It is an honor to have worked among the crew at Kama'aina Acu and apprenticed with teacher and mentor Joe Bright. He has been such a rock of support through any challenge and fountain of knowledge and experience, willing to help out in every step of the learning process. He has truly been integral to my growth as an acupuncturist and healer. Joe - you are phenomenal! Also, to all the great staff (and friends) who work hard to make Chinese medicine accessible to the community - I have the utmost respect for you and will always consider this crew of acupuncturists family! Y'all are awesome and so wonderful at what you do.
Special thanks to all the great patients who are part of our community - for bringing your aloha, and allowing me to be have been a support for you on your healing path. You have been a joy to work with and are such a huge part of why it is great to work at Kama'aina Acu.
I will be just over the Pali in Kailua, working to build up Olanani AcuOasis and continuing with my passion in Chinese medicine. Congrats and blessings to Ryoko Ito and Maire Cahoon for stepping up and taking on new shifts at Kama'aina Acupuncture!!
My students should ponder this one for sure. For our esteemed patients this is exactly how Traditional Chinese medical thought would say the lungs participate. :)
Long overdue look at effectiveness issues
Those vaccinated 3 years in a row appeared to fare the worst in 2014-15 against H3N2 flu, but experts say it's still beneficial to get a flu shot each year.
Our little Kailua sanctuary is now open for business!
For the last month and a half, we have been working hard to transform this space into a healing oasis. We touched every inch of the floor, wall, and ceiling and have now birthed a space that is ready for the community! We are proud to be Kailua's first open-space acupuncture clinic!
Special thanks the incredible Joe (of-all-trades) Bright who directed the whole operation, Patricia Hu for the gorgeous hand-painted mandala wall art, the Kama'aina Acu crew for all their support, to Eric for the beautiful tile work, Mike Hegazy for his heavy liftin, our lovely Kailua ladies for lending a hand to painting (Dee, Pomai, Rachel, and Irie)Joe Acidera and crew for building the reception counter, Sierra Dew for helping us birth our logo, to my true love Roy Tomas for all the flooring, painting, building and being by my side to help with everything, and to all our friends and family who gifted items big and small to our clinic, including my parents who gave me faith and much needed monetary support. And of course, Tai Hawkins, my goddess partner/vision we/manifest/co-creator and co-owner of Olanani AcuOasis!!
Come visit Kama'aina Acu's sister clinic and see the space for yourself. As one person put it, "I feel healed just walking in!" We are at 270 Ku'ulei Road, Suite 205. Our rates are $30-$50 sliding scale for most treatments. We are taking appointments M-F 9am -6pm and friends of Kama'ainaAcupuncture will receive $10 off. Call Tai or Alicia at (808) 263-8899 for an appointment!
It's happening people...the place is coming together and is gonna feature some beautiful henna wall art by our own Patricia the Amazing! Check out some funny pics here of Joe on the low-rider saw and dancing with the "new" reclaimed wood paneling he just put up. Also got Tai (always smiling) on floors and Roy getting rid of that old yellow paint juju from the walls for good!! Missing here..photos of Dee, Joe's sister, helping us with painting reclaimed jalousies...thanks Dee!!! Also, Eric, who helped us retire the entire bathroom (woot woot!) and Ryoko, who came for painting jalousies over girl-talk 😍So grateful for such an amazing crew of transformers!!!
Alicia putting in the elbow grease for our redwood panels
Busy getting new sister clinic ready in Kailua...Joe not only teaches acupuncture, he teaches drywalling , skimming and paint color theory!! Bottom right, Patricia and Joe having ice cream date in the car after a day of skimming walls :)
We welcome Ryoko to the KA crew! A long time assistant, then occasional substitute, and now regular!
So August marks our clinic anniversary. The doors were opened back in 2009. Here's to all the wonderful people who have come through our doors through the years! Our deepest thanks for letting us be a part of your life! :)

Hey folks, in case you haven't already been informed, there is a Hepatitis A outbreak on Oahu. Baskin Robbins and Taco Bell. The incubation period for Hep A is 1-3 weeks. And just so you know, Hep A is treatable with herbs and acupuncture.

The confirmed case count in the Hepatitis A outbreak on Oahu now stands at 52, according to the Hawaii State Department of Health, up from 31 confirmed cases a week ago. News to turn heads...Harvard Medical School published another article highlighting acupuncture as an effective treatment for neck pain, better than standard treatments such as physical therapy and medication. YAH!!!
http://www.health.harvard.edu/pain/acupuncture-and-alexander-technique-help-relieve-chronic-neck-pain
Several sessions of acupuncture and the Alexander Technique, which teaches proper posture and alignment, helped to reduce chronic neck pain by 32% and 31% respectively among long-time sufferers.
Drug ads can be fun too. Disclaimer of the month: "Drinking fluids may reduce the risk of dehydration." Good to know... :)
Happy to introduce Chinese medicine to a 2-year-old tonight. Poor little guy caught a cold. So after some acupressure, massage, and some TLC of course, he was blowing us kisses and throwing shakas. He even learned a new word before he left and for the first time we all got a "yo yo yo" to top things off😎. We don't "specialize" in anything, but we do our darnedest to make everyone feel comfortable.
The Center for Disease Control just issued guidelines yesterday telling doctors to avoid prescribing opiates for pain, saying the risks of drugs far outweigh the benefits for most people. Glad we are on top of this issue at Kama'aina Acupuncture. Get your pain relief with our needles...naturally!
http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2016/03/15/cdc-issues-new-guidelines-opiate-prescribing-reduce-abuse-overdoses/81809704/
CDC said the risks from the powerful painkillers far outweigh the benefits for most patients.
After a relaxing hour one patient had but one word to say: "Bliss"
Not a bad way to spend your Sunday afternoon👍
What to do when your teacher visits? Everything you can!!
After 10+ years of therapists and drugs it was nice to hear and see that little light bulb finally turn on: "I can't believe I've never thought about it that way!"
It's amazing how such a simple perspective can be so eye-opening👀
When Joe's teacher comes to town everyone gets to learn something! The awesome Dr. Mou visiting from NYC :)
Easiest first time fertility couple yet. "You're already pregnant!" :) That won't happen too often!
Nice to hear: "Just pulling up to your building was starting to make me feel relaxed." See! It's not just the needles! :)
