Yesterday, WikiVision held our 5th annual student fundraising concert. With thirteen student performers ranging from kindergarten to twelfth grade, coming from all across the island, it was a great success! We are so grateful to all the performers who came and volunteered their time, sharing talents from jazz improvisation, to hula, to harp. We also heard testimonies from two different patients from this past surgery cycle about what WikiVision and cataract surgery have meant to them. We are so thankful to ‘Iolani School for supporting us and allowing our use of their facilities, to everyone who attended, to all our volunteers, and to the donors who make our mission possible. We wouldn’t have the chance to make change in our community without all of you.

This past weekend, WikiVision also held our annual post-op day! Ophthalmologists checked in with patients to see how they were doing post-surgery, and students conducted interviews to learn about their feelings throughout the process. Next up, our fundraising concert at ‘Iolani School’s Seto Hall, this Saturday at 1pm. We hope to see you there!

WikiVision’s recent Pre-Op Day was a success! We met with 30 patients for their surgery assessments, including measurements for their intraocular lenses. Our student team also spent time hearing each patient’s story and how vision loss has affected their lives. Now, we’re looking ahead with excitement to restoring sight at our upcoming Surgery Day!

WikiVision is proud to present our fifth annual surgery day, which will be held on September 7th, 2025! In furthering our goal of providing free cataract surgery to uninsured and underinsured members of our community, we have begun our search process to find candidates for this year’s procedures. If you are, or someone you know is, affected by cataracts and might be eligible, please contact us to schedule an evaluation. We are so thankful to our team of surgeons, Dr. Vivien Tham, Dr. William Wong Jr., and Dr. Mai Tsukikawa. We are also endlessly grateful to the Eye Surgery Center of Hawaii, as well as all of our donors. As we embark on the fifth year of our mission, we understand that none of this would be possible without the generous and continuous support of so many individuals. We look forward to another great year!

Another patient WikiVision was fortunate enough to assist this year was Albert S. We were thrilled to help him in receiving his first cataract surgery. Naturally, he was quite nervous, but expressed his gratitude for the doctors, nurses, and team of people who all contributed their time and efforts, saying “Thanks to WikiVision, the entire process was comfortable.” Following his procedure, Albert looks forward to appreciating the little things in life. He’s now able to enjoy driving at night again, as well as spend more time outdoors, without worries about his vision holding him back!

Avoiding pterygiums is important, especially if you’ve had them before. Some important ways you can do this are wearing sunglasses, and using artificial tears. Sunglasses can protect your eyes from both ultraviolet light and airborne dust and debris, while artificial tears can hydrate your eyes and offset the effects of a dry environment.
