Repost from 🙌🏽

Practicing ‘Olelo Hawaii (the Hawaiian language) can be intimidating for many Kanaka ‘Oiwi (Native Hawaiians), especially those of us who didn’t grow up around it or weren’t feeling “Hawaiian enough” to even try. There are many reasons for that (none of it our fault), but thankfully, our lähui, both on the pae ‘aina and continent, have been working hard to restore confidence in the language by making it accessible through plenty of different channels and Mahina
‘Ōlelo Hawaiʻi is a great way to re-dedicate ourselves to learning it bit by bit!

It’s understandable to feel intimidated; many of us from all different lived experiences feel the same way, but we can work together to reassure each other that not only is it worth it - it’s our kuleana (responsibility) to our kupuna who were forbidden to speak their mother tongue. And that’s not to apply more pressure; it’s meant to inspire us all to reclaim what was taken. That’s one of the most powerful things you can do, and it all starts just one word at a time.

Let’s kōkua (help) each other out in this journey - drop a comment with one of your favorite ‘olelo resources or give some positive advice to another Kanaka who might feel too embarrassed or uncertain to try.

E ola ka ‘Olelo Hawaii! The Hawaiian language shall live!
