If you feel like your child always wants to talk at *inconvenient* times, you’re not crazy! 😅

Two adjustments to try:

1️⃣Your Questions:
Asking “How was your day?” is vague and can be difficult for kids to answer. Children need extra guidance to know where to start. Instead, ask about a specific moment, person, or feeling from their day.

2️⃣Your Timing:
Don’t forget timing and consistency! Snack, meal, or bedtime is often when your kids are more relaxed and willing to open up.

Remember, gestures and simple words all count at this age. At 2–3 years old, communication looks like pointing, nodding, shaking their head, using single words or short phrases, copying sounds, and taking turns back and forth.

The news may have your family feeling anxious, lost, confused, angry, or stressed…and that’s okay. Processing our own emotions while helping our kids do the same is not easy. There’s no rule book for any of this.

Though it’s scary, encouraging open communication early on is key. Because it’s not about what will happen if we do talk about it…it’s more about what will happen if we don’t — misinformation, more fear, and less awareness.

Don’t forget to continue taking care of yourselves by practicing mindfulness and limiting daily screen time.
