The UH Cancer Center, in partnership with Google Cloud, recently hosted a landmark full-day workshop called “Accelerating Research in the Age of AI: A Synergistic Workshop with Google.” The event, organized by Dr. John Shepherd, Chief Scientific Officer at the UH Cancer Center, brought together UH faculty, investigators, trainees and students to hear from and work with AI industry leaders. They learned how academic-industry partnerships can strengthen research capacity by expanding access to advanced AI tools, high-performance computing, and specialized technical expertise; and how fellow academics are using AI to change the way they conduct research. Mahalo to Google for its support of this impactful workshop. To learn more about Dr. Shepherd’s lab, visit https://ow.ly/Fih950Z4tUW.

The 22nd International Lung Cancer Consortium (ILCCO) 2026 Annual Meeting was held at the UH Cancer for the first time, March 11-13 at the Sullivan Conference Center of the UH Cancer Center. Hosted by UH Cancer Center researchers Dr. Lani Park and Dr. Loïc Le Marchand, the annual meeting brought together nearly 80 attendees — epidemiologists, biologists, behavioral scientists, oncologists, pulmonologists, and other leaders from around the globe, who are dedicated to advancing research in lung cancer through sharing comparable data from ongoing lung cancer case-control and cohort studies. Importantly, this scientific meeting underscored the critical need for collaborative and interdisciplinary work in advancing lung cancer prevention and improving disease survival.

University of Hawaiʻi Cancer Center researcher Dr. Michele Carbone has been named the recipient of the distinguished 2026 Szent-Györgyi Prize for Progress in Cancer Research.

The National Foundation for Cancer Research honor recognizes Carbone’s groundbreaking discovery that susceptibility to mesothelioma — a rare and lethal cancer of the lining of the lungs and abdomen — can be transmitted through families in a Mendelian fashion, driven by inherited mutations in the gene BAP1.

The finding has transformed how the disease is understood, diagnosed, treated and prevented worldwide, and driven historic public policy changes that have saved lives across generations.

Carbone’s findings have driven transformative public health action, the foundation said: In Cappadocia in Turkey, his research prompted the government to build two new villages and hospitals, and relocate genetically susceptible populations away from carcinogenic erionite fibers. In North Dakota, his work led the state government to repave more than 300 miles of erionite-contaminated roads, protecting children who had been exposed through dust raised by traffic.

Blood-based markers that could improve early, less invasive detection of inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) have been identified by researchers at the University of Hawaiʻi Cancer Center. The discovery offers a potential new blood test to diagnose the disease sooner, monitor its progression and support the development of more targeted treatments for patients facing this fast-moving form of cancer.

The study, published in Science Advances, was conducted in collaboration with MD Anderson Cancer Center and the University of Texas at Austin.

IBC is a highly aggressive type of breast cancer that has historically been difficult to distinguish from other forms because it does not show clear genetic differences.

The research team used a specialized sequencing technology to analyze RNA, or genetic instructions, found in blood samples. Led by Naoto Ueno, director at the UH Cancer Center, Savitri Krishnamurthy, professor of anatomic pathology at MD Anderson Cancer Center, and Alan Lambowitz, professor of oncology at the University of Texas at Austin, the team examined both tumor and blood samples to identify signals that may improve detection and monitoring of IBC.

Congratulations to the seven researchers from the UH Cancer Center who were selected to present their work through panels and/or poster presentations at the prestigious American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Annual Meeting in San Diego. The presented research included breakthrough studies into triple-negative breast cancer and colorectal cancer incidence, and Multiethnic Cohort Study (MEC) data, illustrating the cutting-edge and impactful research conducted via our center. Over 20,000 people attended the conference April 17-22 to focus on advancing cancer science to save lives globally.

Mahalo to the nearly 100 people who joined us in person and online on Saturday 4/18 at our UH Cancer Center for a free workshop on “How Clinical Trials Save Lives," presented by our Susan C. Hirano Cancer CARE Community program.

Attendees learned how patients can navigate, and may benefit from, participating in clinical trials of new treatments for cancer. They also received an overview of our groundbreaking new Ho‘ōla Early Phase Clinical Research Center, where, for the first time in history, Hawaiʻi patients will have the opportunity to access innovative “early phase,” or Phase I, clinical trial treatments for cancer here at home instead of having to fly to the U.S. mainland.

Research experts, patients and caregivers shared information and personal stories in a panel discussion. And our Cancer CARE Community also celebrated its 1-year anniversary!
